Chapter 9 - The Ring of Sapphire and Gold

Emma noticed the movement. “What’s that?”

Dante didn't answer immediately. He took a slow, deep breath, dropping down onto one knee on the sunlit stone paving of the courtyard.

Emma’s breath hitched in her throat. Her hands flew to her mouth, her eyes wide with shock and sudden, joyful tears.

Dante produced a small, vintage black velvet box. He popped it open with his thumb.

Inside lay a ring that took her breath away. It was an exquisite, antique-cut sapphire—the exact deep, velvety blue of the dress she had worn to the Drake Hotel on the night she chose his storm—surrounded by a halo of micro-pave diamonds set in warm yellow gold.

“Dante...” she squeaked, her voice trembling.

“Emma,” Dante said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with a vulnerability he had never shown another living soul. “Six months ago, a girl walked into my office at midnight with twelve dollars in her bank account and flour on her clothes. She was terrified of the world, but she stood before the most dangerous man in Chicago and spoke the truth.”

Tears spilled over Emma’s eyelashes, tracking down her glowing cheeks.

“You brought light into a life that had known only shadows,” Dante continued, looking up at her with undisguised adoration. “You taught me that strength isn't how many enemies you defeat... it’s how fiercely you protect the people you love. I don't want a single day of my future without you by my side.”

He held the ring up slightly, the sun catching the blue facets of the stone.

“Emma Reynolds... will you marry me? Will you be my queen, my wife, and the mother of my children?”

Emma didn't hesitate for a single second.

She dropped to her knees right in front of him on the stone floor, throwing her arms around his neck so hard they both nearly toppled over onto the grass.

“Yes!” she cried against his ear, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated joy. “Yes, Dante! A thousand times yes!”

Dante let out a breathless, booming laugh of pure delight—a sound so rare and light that Marco, who was watching discreetly through the kitchen window, smiled broadly and wiped a genuine tear from his scarred cheek.

Dante slipped the sapphire ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly, as if carved by angels specifically for her hand.

He lifted her face and kissed her—a deep, passionate, victorious kiss that echoed through the quiet garden, carrying with it all the promise of a peaceful, radiant future.
