Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Gift

By Thursday morning, the tide of the mob war was shifting rapidly.

Dominic’s surgical strikes had dismantled three of Uncle Vince’s key operations in less than forty-eight hours. The second defecting captain, Paulie, had fled to Florida in terror, abandoning Vince entirely.

Desperate and cornered, Antonio Romano and Uncle Vince realized that Dominic was not weakened by his daughter—he was ten times more lethal.

In a secluded penthouse in Manhattan, Antonio Romano slammed his heavy fist onto a glass table, glaring at Vince Moretti.

"Your nephew is tearing my family apart!" Antonio roared. "Two of my distribution warehouses were raided by his men last night! The Commission is laughing at us!"

Vince, looking disheveled and frantic, gulped down a glass of whiskey. "Dominic is being protected by Marco and his core guard. We can't reach him directly. But..."

Vince’s eyes glinted with a sick, desperate malice.

"What?" Antonio growled.

"He has a weakness now," Vince whispered, leaning in close. "A weakness he keeps hidden in a Brooklyn brownstone. That maid and the little girl."

Antonio frowned, his old-school mafia code balking slightly. "We don't hit children, Vince. It brings the whole Commission down on us."

"We don't need to hit the child directly," Vince sneered. "We just need to use her to draw Dominic out into an ambush. He goes everywhere with fifty guards. But if he thinks the girl is in danger, he’ll run into a trap completely alone."

Antonio hesitated, then a dark, ruthless smile spread across his face. "Do it. But make sure Dominic doesn't leave that trap alive."

At twelve o'clock that afternoon, a delivery truck pulled up to the Brooklyn brownstone safehouse.

A courier stepped out, carrying a large, beautifully wrapped Christmas gift box tied with a golden ribbon, addressed directly to Lily Carter.

The guards at the gate intercepted the package immediately, scanning it with bomb detectors and X-ray equipment before allowing it through the iron doors.

Inside the kitchen, Elena was preparing lunch when the lead security officer brought the box inside.

"It cleared security, Miss Elena," the guard reported. "No explosives, no chemical traces. Just a stuffed animal and a card."

Elena frowned, suspicious. "Who sent it?"

"The card says it's from Mr. Moretti's personal secretary," the guard replied.

Elena opened the box carefully. Inside lay a giant, fluffy white teddy bear, wearing a red velvet bow.

Lily, who was sitting on the rug playing with her wooden blocks, saw the giant bear and let out a gasp of joy. "A big bear!"

She scrambled over, her small hands reaching out for the toy.

"Wait, Lily!" Elena warned, stepping forward.

But Lily had already grabbed the bear's arm, hugging it tightly against her chest.

Suddenly, a tiny, high-pitched electronic beep emitted from inside the bear's seam.

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

Elena’s heart stopped. "GET HER AWAY FROM IT!" she screamed, lunging forward.

The lead guard snatched the bear from Lily’s hands and threw it out the kitchen window into the enclosed concrete courtyard just as the device inside activated.

It wasn't a bomb.

It was a pressurized tear-gas and smoke canister designed to instantly fill the courtyard and ventilation system with blinding, suffocating chemical smoke!

PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT!

Thick, yellow chemical smoke spewed violently from the bear, filling the courtyard, seeping into the air intake vents of the brownstone. Alarm sirens began blaring wildly throughout the house.

"INTRUDERS!" the security guards shouted over the intercom. "WE ARE UNDER ATTACK!"

Outside the brownstone, two heavy black delivery vans smashed through the iron perimeter gates! Twelve heavily armed hitmen wearing gas masks, led by Uncle Vince’s personal lieutenant, surged out of the vans, firing automatic weapons into the security post!

TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

Glass shattered, bullets tore through the front entryway, and the brownstone turned into a warzone!

Elena scooped Lily into her arms, screaming as bullets ripped through the kitchen cabinets above her head. She scrambled toward the reinforced underground panic room in the basement, clutching the terrified, crying child against her heart!

"DOMINIC!" Elena sobbed into her encrypted radio as she slammed the heavy steel panic room door shut, locking the bolts. "DOMINIC! THEY'RE INSIDE THE HOUSE!"
