Chapter 2 - The Fallouts and the Flames

The silence in the grand ballroom was so profound that you could hear the soft hum of the air conditioning unit high above the crystal chandeliers.
Vivien Lauron stood frozen under the white spotlight, her face draining of all color. For three long seconds, she simply stared at Nathan as if he had spoken in an ancient, forgotten language.
"Nathan..." Vivien whispered, her voice cracking slightly, though she maintained her rigid posture for the cameras. "What kind of joke is this? Step back to the microphone and fix this immediately."
Nathan didn't raise his voice. He didn't look flustered. He simply reached out, gently took Vivien’s left hand, and unclasped the eight-carat canary diamond ring from her finger.
"It’s not a joke, Vivien," Nathan said clearly, his voice picked up by the lapel microphone and broadcast softly to every corner of the room. "A marriage is built on shared values, compassion, and respect. Tonight, I saw who you truly are when you think no one of importance is watching. I cannot marry a woman who treats innocent people with cruelty."
A collective, audible gasp rippled through the hundreds of wealthy guests. Camera flashes began firing rapidly like a storm of lightning bolts. Socialites covered their mouths with gloved hands; corporate executives leaned into their wives, whispering furiously.
"How dare you!" Vivien spat, her composure completely shattering. Her eyes blazed with a terrifying, unbridled rage. "You are embarrassing me in front of the entire city over a servant's brat?! Over a piece of trash that crawled into my party?!"
"She wasn't trash," Nathan replied, stepping back from her. "She was a guest in my home. And this engagement is over."
He dropped the diamond ring back into her palm, turned his back on her, and walked off the stage.
"Nathan! Nathan, come back here!" Vivien shrieked, entirely abandoning her aristocratic polish. She took two steps forward, her heavy silk gown rustling violently, but her father, Arthur Lauron—a stern, silver-haired patriarch of the old-money Lauron empire—stepped up onto the stage and grabbed her arm, his face dark with embarrassment and fury.
"Control yourself, Vivien!" Arthur growled under his breath, glaring at the flashing cameras. "The press is recording every second!"
Nathan didn't look back. He walked down the center aisle of the ballroom, his head held high, his expression unreadable. Guests parted for him in stunned silence. As he pushed open the grand double doors and stepped out into the cool night air of the courtyard, he felt as if a suffocating weight had been lifted from his chest.
He took a deep breath of the damp midnight air.
Beside the fountain, his chief security detail and personal assistant, Marcus, was already waiting with the door of Nathan’s black Maybach open. Marcus had been watching the feed on his monitor.
"Sir," Marcus said, his voice entirely neutral, though a hint of admiration flickered in his eyes. "Where to?"
"Drive me to the coastal cabin, Marcus," Nathan said, sliding into the back seat. "And turn off my personal phone."
"Right away, sir. What about the media?"
"Let them write whatever they want," Nathan said quietly, staring out the window at his grand estate as the car pulled away. "The truth doesn't need a public relations firm."
By five o'clock the following morning, the news had exploded across every major media outlet in the country.
THE BILLIONAIRE WALKS AWAY: Nathan Sterling Cancels $5M Wedding On Stage. SOCIETY SCANDAL: Vivien Lauron Left at the Altar Over Housekeeper’s Child. STERLING GLOBAL IN TURMOIL: Shares Wobble as Engagement Collapses.
In her family's penthouse suite overlooking Central Park, Vivien Lauron shattered three crystal vases against the marble wall.
"He humiliated me!" she screamed, her eyes red-rimmed and swollen with tears of rage, her hair disheveled. "He chose a maid and her bastard child over ME! In front of the governor! In front of the press!"
Arthur Lauron sat in a leather armchair, sipping black coffee, his face a grim mask of cold calculation.
"Calm down, Vivien," Arthur commanded sternly. "Tantrums will not repair our stock value. The Lauron Group’s merger with Sterling Global was supposed to clear our offshore debts. Now that the engagement is off, our creditors will start asking questions by Monday morning."
"I don't care about the debts!" Vivien shrieked, slamming her fists onto the glass dining table. "I want him destroyed, Papa! I want Nathan Sterling begging on his knees! I want that housekeeper and her little brat thrown onto the streets!"
Arthur’s eyes narrowed into dark slits. "Nathan Sterling thinks he is untouchable because he built his tech and logistics empire from nothing. He thinks he can insult the Lauron name without consequences. He is wrong."
Arthur stood up, straightening his silk robe. "Call Richard Vance at the Daily Chronicle. Tell him we are granting an exclusive interview. We will paint Nathan as an unstable, cruel executive who staged a public humilation to cover up his own financial irregularities. And as for the housekeeper..."
Arthur smiled coldly. "I will personally ensure she never finds employment in this city again."
While the media storm raged across the metropolis, the coastal cabin two hours north of the city was silent.
Nathan stood on the wooden deck, looking out at the gray, misty Atlantic ocean crashing against the rocky cliffs. He held a hot cup of black coffee in his hand.
He heard soft footsteps behind him. Marcus walked out onto the deck, holding a secure tablet.
"Good morning, Mr. Sterling," Marcus said.
"How bad is it?" Nathan asked without turning around.
"The Lauron family has launched a full PR campaign," Marcus reported concisely. "Vivien’s father is spreading rumors that you are mentally unstable and that Sterling Global is hiding debt. Their legal team is threatening to sue for breach of contract regarding the joint real estate venture."
Nathan took a sip of his coffee. "Let them sue. The real estate contracts had a morality clause. Vivien’s behavior on private property breached it first."
"There's more, sir," Marcus hesitated. "A black SUV was spotted near the south gates of your main estate an hour ago. Private investigators hired by the Laurons are trying to locate Maria Santos and her daughter. They want to put pressure on her—or worse, pay her to sign a false statement saying you staged the incident to embarrass Vivien."
Nathan’s head snapped toward Marcus, his eyes suddenly burning with dangerous intensity. "They are going after Maria?"
"It appears so, sir. Arthur Lauron plays dirty when he's cornered."
Nathan set his coffee cup down on the wooden railing with a sharp clack.
"Marcus," Nathan commanded, his voice cold and sharp as broken ice. "Send two security teams to the estate immediately. Bring Maria and Lily here to the cabin. Nobody touches them."
"Understood, sir."
"And Marcus?"
May you like
"Yes, Mr. Sterling?"
"Call our chief legal officer and our corporate intelligence team," Nathan said, looking back out at the roaring ocean waves. "It’s time to look into the Lauron Group’s offshore accounts. Arthur Lauron wants a war? I’ll give him one."
