Chapter 5 - The Ambush at Nine

Monday morning arrived under a heavy grey sky over downtown Manhattan.
The glass tower of Sterling Global Headquarters soared eighty stories into the clouds, surrounded by a swarm of media vans, reporters, and flashing news cameras.
At 8:45 AM, a sleek black Maybach pulled up to the private executive entrance beneath the building. Marcus opened the door, and Nathan Sterling stepped out, wearing a flawless charcoal three-piece suit, his posture tall, erect, and commanding. Beside him walked Eleanor Sterling and Victoria Vance, holding leather briefcases.
Reporters surged forward, shouting over one another.
"Mr. Sterling! Are you resigning today?!" "Did you really stage the breakup to hide company debt?!" "What do you say to Vivien Lauron’s accusations?!"
Nathan didn't slow his stride. He walked through the glass doors, completely ignoring the noise, his heavy leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the polished marble lobby floor. The security guards bowed their heads respectfully as he passed, opening the private executive elevator.
On the 75th floor, the grand boardroom was already filled with tension.
Seated around the thirty-foot mahogany conference table were the twelve members of the board of directors. Sitting at the head of the table was Jonathan Croft, looking smug, surrounded by stacks of printed media reports and financial summaries. Standing near the glass wall, invited as "special guests," were Arthur Lauron and Vivien herself, wearing a sharp black designer suit, looking triumphant.
When the heavy doors swung open and Nathan walked in, the temperature in the room plummeted.
"Nathan," Jonathan Croft stood up, offering a tight, insincere smile. "We didn't think you'd show up in person given the... circumstances."
"It's my company, Jonathan," Nathan said smoothly, walking to the empty chair at the opposite end of the table. "I don't hide in corners."
Arthur Lauron sneered from the window, stepping forward. "You won't own it for long, Sterling. Your reckless personal behavior has wiped three hundred million dollars off this company’s market capitalization in forty-eight hours. You are a liability."
Vivien crossed her arms, her eyes fixed on Nathan with icy satisfaction. "You should have accepted the quiet exit settlement my father offered you yesterday, Nathan. Now you leave with nothing."
Nathan sat down slowly in his leather executive chair. Eleanor sat to his right, and Victoria stood behind him.
"Are we ready to begin?" Nathan asked calmly, completely ignoring Arthur and Vivien.
Jonathan Croft cleared his throat, knocking his wooden gavel against the desk. "This emergency meeting of the Board of Directors of Sterling Global is now in session. The agenda: a motion of no-confidence against Chief Executive Officer Nathan Sterling due to gross reputational damage, personal misconduct, and stock instability."
"I second the motion," shouted one of the bribed directors at the far end of the table.
"Before we take a vote," Nathan spoke up, his voice effortlessly dominating the room, "I believe the board deserves to see the full context of why this meeting was called."
"We don't need to hear your excuses, Nathan!" Arthur Lauron snapped angrily. "The media reports speak for themselves!"
"I'm not making excuses, Arthur," Nathan said, gesturing to Victoria. "I’m presenting evidence."
Victoria stepped forward, clicking a small remote control. The giant high-definition screens along the wall flashed to life.
Instead of company stock charts, the screen displayed a complex web of offshore banking accounts in Grand Cayman, complete with bank transfer receipts, forged audit documents, and wire transfers labeled Lauron Holdings LLC.
Arthur Lauron’s face instantly drained of all color. His hands began to visibly tremble.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Jonathan Croft demanded, jumping up. "This is irrelevant personal business!"
"It’s entirely relevant," Nathan said coldly, standing up and placing both hands on the mahogany table, leaning forward. "For the past six months, Arthur Lauron and Jonathan Croft have been orchestrating a fraudulent merger scheme. Arthur’s company is eighty million dollars in debt. He bribed Jonathan Croft with two million dollars in offshore stock options to push the merger through Sterling Global."
Gasps erupted around the table. The non-corrupt board members sat up, staring at the screens in shock.
"That's a lie! Fabrications!" Arthur shouted, his voice cracking with panic.
"These are certified bank documents provided directly by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network," Victoria Vance announced clearly, handing printed bound volumes to every board member. "Including recorded phone conversations between Mr. Croft and Mr. Lauron discussing how to force Mr. Sterling out if he discovered the debt."
Vivien looked at her father in terror. "Papa... what is she talking about? Is this true?!"
Arthur couldn't answer. He was staring at the screen as if looking at his own execution sentence.
Nathan looked directly at Jonathan Croft, whose face was dripping with cold sweat.
"You tried to stage a coup using my personal life as a distraction," Nathan said, his voice ringing like a iron bell through the quiet room. "You thought because I cared about a little girl and her mother, I was weak. You forgot who built this company."
Nathan reached into his coat, pulling out a signed legal order.
"Jonathan Croft, you are stripped of your vice-presidency immediately for corporate treason and fraud. Federal marshals and the SEC are waiting in the lobby to arrest you and Arthur Lauron."
As if on cue, the heavy doors of the boardroom clicked open. Four federal agents in dark suits stepped into the room.
"Arthur Lauron? Jonathan Croft?" the lead agent said firmly. "You are under arrest for bank fraud, conspiracy, and wire fraud. Please step forward."
Vivien let out a choked shriek as federal agents stepped past her, snapping handcuffs onto her father's wrists. Arthur stumbled backward, his arrogant posture completely shattered, looking pathetic and broken as he was led out of the room. Jonathan Croft didn't even fight; he simply collapsed back into his chair, weeping quietly as he was cuffed.
Vivien stood alone near the glass wall, trembling violently, surrounded by directors who looked at her with disgust and contempt. She looked at Nathan, her eyes wide with desperate, pleading panic.
"Nathan..." Vivien choked out, taking a step toward him, her voice cracking. "Nathan, please... I didn't know about the debt! I swear I didn't know what my father was doing! Please, don't do this to me... I love you!"
Nathan stood tall, looking at her with neither anger nor malice—only profound, absolute pity.
"You never loved me, Vivien," Nathan said softly, his grey eyes steady and clear. "You loved the power, the money, and the image. But image means nothing when the heart is empty."
He turned to the federal agents. "Escort Miss Lauron off the premises."
Two female security officers stepped forward, gently but firmly taking Vivien by the arms.
"Nathan! NATHAN!" Vivien shrieked as she was pulled out into the hallway, her designer heels dragging on the carpet, her glamorous life crumbling into absolute ruin before the eyes of the city.
The boardroom fell silent once more.

Nathan turned back to the remaining board members. "Now. Shall we return to the actual business of Sterling Global?"
The board members stood up one by one, bursting into spontaneous, roaring applause.
