Chapter 1 - The Secret Behind the Lock

The rhythmic clack-clack-clack of Victoria’s Christian Louboutin heels echoing down the marble hallway was a sound I had associated with elegance for seven years. Tonight, it sounded like the steady, methodical approach of a executioner.
"Sir," Emily whispered, her voice cracking as panic flared in her swollen, blood-shot eyes. She struggled against the linen strips binding her wrists, but the knots only tightened, biting deeper into her raw skin. "She took the safety deposit key from your study desk. The black velvet box inside... she didn't just take the money, Mr. Cole. She took the DNA reports."
My breath hitched in my throat. "What DNA reports?"
"The twins..." Emily wept, her tears falling onto my son's dark curls. "She knew you were going to request a paternity test next week. She paid off the lab director to fake the results, but the original documents were locked in that safe. She... she’s not planning to stay, sir. She has a flight to Zurich booked for midnight!"
Before I could process the tidal wave of betrayal crashing over me, the heavy brass door handle turned.
The nursery door swung open.
Victoria stood in the doorway, framed by the warm golden light of the chandelier. She wore a stunning emerald silk dress, her blonde hair styled in flawless waves, a glass of expensive Cabernet swinging casually between her manicured fingers. She didn't look like a monster. She looked like a cover model for an architectural magazine—and that made the scene behind me a thousand times more horrifying.
She froze when her eyes met mine. For a fraction of a second, surprise flickered across her refined features, but she smoothed it over instantly with a practiced, razor-sharp smile.
"Julian," Victoria purred, stepping into the room and closing the door softly behind her. "You're home early, darling. I thought your board meeting ran until eight."
I didn't answer. I stood between her and the bed, my six-foot-two frame trembling with a rage so hot it made my vision blur at the edges.
"What is this, Victoria?" My voice came out as a low, guttural growl that didn't sound like my own.
Victoria raised her glass, taking a deliberate sip before looking past my shoulder at Emily. "Oh, don't be so dramatic, Julian. The girl was throwing a hysterical fit about her sick child. She threatened to walk out and leave our children unattended in the middle of the afternoon. I simply... improvised to ensure our household routine wasn't disrupted."
"You tied her to the headboard," I said, taking a slow step toward my wife. "You split her lip. You strapped my infants to her chest while she was bleeding!"
"She is a servant!" Victoria snapped, her sweet facade instantly crumbling into cold, aristocratic arrogance. "We pay her eighty thousand dollars a year to be available twenty-four hours a day! She doesn't get to abandon her post because her sickly bastard of a son has another episode!"
SMACK!
The sound vibrated through the high-ceilinged room.
I didn't hit her—I struck the wooden frame of the door right beside her head with my fist, shattering the solid oak panel. Victoria gasped, flinching back against the wall, her wine spilling across her green silk dress like fresh blood.
"If you move so much as an inch," I whispered, inches from her pale face, "I will call the police and have you dragged out of this penthouse in handcuffs before your flight to Zurich ever leaves the tarmac."
Victoria’s blue eyes widened in genuine fear for the very first time. She knew I meant every word.
I pulled a silver pocket knife from my trousers, turned my back on her, and rushed to the bed. With swift, careful cuts, I severed the linen bindings around Emily's wrists. The moment her arms fell free, Emily collapsed forward, her body shaking with violent sobs as she cradled my asleep twins against her chest.
"I've got them, Emily," I said gently, reaching down to unbuckle the leather baby harness. "I've got them. You're safe now."
"My son... Mr. Cole, please," Emily begged, her fingers desperately clutching my sleeve. "St. Jude's Hospital called two hours ago. He went into cardiac arrest. He's in the ICU!"
I didn't hesitate. I picked up my phone, dialed my private security chief, Arthur, and put him on speaker.
"Arthur," I ordered. "Bring the Escalade to the front entrance right now. Call Dr. Harrison at St. Jude's—tell him Julian Cole is taking full financial and legal responsibility for Emily Vance's son. I want the best pediatric surgical team in New York in that ICU in ten minutes."
"Right away, Mr. Cole," Arthur responded instantly.
I turned back to Victoria, who was leaning against the wall, frantically dabbing at her stained dress with a silk handkerchief.
"You're going to give me the velvet box, Victoria," I said, stepping toward her with an icy calmness that terrified her more than my outburst. "And then you're going to sit in the study under Arthur's guard while I take Emily to the hospital. If you try to run, I will release the security footage of what you did in this room to every news outlet in the city by morning."

Victoria glared at me with absolute venom, but her fingers shook as she pulled a small gold key from her purse and threw it at my feet.
"You're making a mistake, Julian," she spat, her voice dripping with poison. "You think that pathetic little girl is an angel? Ask her who the father of her dying son really is!"
