Chapter 3 - The Web of Betrayal

By 2:00 AM, the waiting room outside Operating Room 3 was dead quiet, save for the hum of the vending machines and the soft ticking of the wall clock.
Leo and Maya were fast asleep in a private hospital suite down the hall, guarded by Arthur’s men. Emily sat in a vinyl armchair near the operating room doors, her face pale, her hands wrapped around a cup of warm tea I had brought her.
I sat beside her, having changed out of my ruined suit jacket into a simple gray sweatshirt one of my guards had retrieved from the car.
"He's going to make it, Emily," I said softly, reaching over to place my hand over her trembling fingers. "He has his mother's strength."
Emily looked at our joined hands, then up at me with tears glistening in her eyes. "Why are you doing all this for us, Mr. Cole? You don't owe me anything. Your own marriage is falling apart because of the secrets in that box."
"My marriage died a long time ago," I replied truthfully, feeling a strange sense of liberation wash over my chest. "Victoria never loved me. She loved the Cole name, the Penthouse on Park Avenue, and the unlimited black cards. But what she did to you... what she did to a defenseless child... that is unforgivable."
The double doors of the surgical wing swung open.
Dr. Harrison stepped out, pulling down his surgical mask. He had a tired smile on his weathered face.
Emily instantly stood up, her tea spilling onto the floor. "Doctor?!"
"The operation was a complete success, Miss Vance," Dr. Harrison announced warmly. "We managed to repair the aortic valve and stabilize his lung pressure. Toby is in the recovery ward. He’s a fighter."
Emily let out a choked sob, her knees buckling beneath her. I caught her before she hit the floor, lifting her into my arms and holding her tight as she wept tears of relief against my shoulder.
"Thank you... thank you God... thank you, Mr. Cole," she wept.
"Call me Julian," I whispered into her soft hair. "Please."
While Emily was permitted into the recovery room to see tiny three-year-old Toby hooked up to monitors, my phone vibrated in my pocket.
It was Arthur.
"Mr. Cole," Arthur’s dark voice came through the speaker. "We have a situation back at the penthouse."
My tone instantly hardened. "Did Victoria try to leave?"
"Worse, sir. Two men just tried to break into the private garage using your emergency codes. We apprehended them near the elevator bay. One of them is Richard Vance—Emily's ex-husband."
I clenched my fist until my knuckles turned white. "And the other?"
"A lawyer named Marcus Sterling," Arthur reported. "He’s carrying a briefcase full of forged custody papers for the twins and a cashier's check for three million dollars drawn from your corporate account."
A dark, cold smile touched my lips. The trap was springing, but Victoria didn't realize I was the one holding the cage.
"Hold them in the wine cellar," I ordered flatly. "Call my private legal counsel, Mr. Vance. Tell him to prepare papers for full divorce, criminal assault, kidnapping, and corporate embezzlement. I’m heading back to Park Avenue now."
I walked to the glass window of the ICU recovery room, looking inside. Emily was sitting beside a tiny hospital bed, holding her little boy's pale hand, singing the same soft lullaby she had sung to my twins earlier that evening.
I knocked gently on the glass. She turned her head, offering me a fragile, beautiful smile.

"I have to clean up the trash at home, Emily," I said through the intercom. "Stay here with Toby. My men are outside the door. Nobody will ever hurt you again."
"Thank you, Julian," she whispered back. "Be careful."
