Chapter 7 - The Midnight Escalation

At thirty-eight weeks, the storm that had been gathering over Lake Washington finally broke.
It was 2:00 AM on a freezing Thursday morning when the first sharp contraction hit.
Sophie gasped, her body arching off the mattress as a violent bolt of pain tore through her abdomen.
Brandon was awake instantly. He didn't panic; he didn't freeze. The executive who had managed crisis acquisitions across three continents clicked into high gear.
“Duration?” he asked, flipping back the covers and sitting beside her, his watch already ticking in his hand.
“Strong,” Sophie gasped, gripping his arm with enough force to bruise the flesh beneath his sleeve. “Very strong. Brandon... this isn't like the practice braxton-hicks. This is real.”
Brandon reached for his phone, pressing the speed-dial button for Dr. Arthur Vance.
“Arthur,” Brandon said instantly when the doctor picked up on the second ring. “It’s time. Contractions started two minutes ago. We’re moving to the vehicle now.”
“I’m alerting the private maternity floor at Swedish,” Vance replied calmly. “The surgical and delivery team is on standby. Drive safely, Brandon.”
Brandon helped Sophie into a thick, warm cashmere coat and carried her down the grand marble staircase—the very staircase she had cleaned with a mop twelve months ago—in his arms.
His driver, Marcus, already had the Maybach idling at the front entrance, the interior heated to a precise seventy-two degrees.
As the heavy car roared down the winding drive of the Medina estate, the rain turned into slush, splattering against the windshield.
Inside the passenger cabin, Sophie’s contractions accelerated rapidly, coming every three minutes. She gripped Brandon’s hands with both of hers, her forehead resting against his shoulder as she fought through each wave of agonizing pain.
“Look at me, Sophie,” Brandon commanded softly, cupping her face, forcing her to focus on his eyes amidst the darkness of the car. “Breathe with me. In for four. Out for four.”
He matched her breathing, his voice acting as a steady, unyielding anchor in the storm of her pain. He didn't care about the rain; he didn't care about the sliding roads; his entire universe had shrunk to the space of the rear leather seat, to the woman fighting to bring his son into the world.
The private delivery suite at Swedish Medical Center was ready when they arrived at 2:45 AM.
Dr. Vance and a team of four specialized nurses moved with practiced efficiency. The room was flooded with warm light, monitors hummed quietly, and the emergency surgical suite across the hall stood open just in case complications arose.
For the next four hours, Brandon never left her side.
He didn't stand in the corner like an executive watching a project unfold; he stood beside the bed, holding her hand, letting her crush his fingers during every contraction, wiping the sweat from her forehead with warm towels, and whispering words of devotion into her ear.
At 6:15 AM, as the first grey light of dawn began to creep through the high windows overlooking the city, Dr. Vance stepped between Sophie’s raised knees.
“All right, Sophie,” Dr. Vance said, his voice firm and encouraging. “Full dilation achieved. On the next contraction, I need a deep breath and a ten-second push.”
Sophie shook her head, tears streaming down her exhausted, pale face. “I can’t... Brandon, I’m so tired... I don't have anything left...”
Brandon leaned down, placing his face inches from hers, his dark eyes blazing with an intensity that seemed to pour raw life back into her body.
“You can do this, Sophie,” he whispered fiercely, his voice trembling with an emotion so deep it shook his entire frame. “Look at me. You are the strongest woman I have ever known. You brought me back to life. Now bring our son into the world.”
Sophie looked into his eyes—the eyes of the man who had learned to love—and found her final reserve of strength.

She took a deep, shuddering breath as the contraction hit.
She pushed.
