Chapter 8 - The Forty-Seven Seconds

The room seemed to shrink until time itself slowed to a crawl.
The monitor beeps faded into a distant background drone. The sound of the rain against the window ceased to exist.
At precisely 6:22 AM, a sound cut through the sterile air of the room—a sharp, clear, indignant cry of new life.
“We have a boy!” Dr. Vance announced, his face breaking into a wide, triumphant smile as he lifted the tiny, slick child into the air.
The baby had been alive for forty-seven seconds when Brandon Mercer began to cry.
Not the restrained tears of a powerful man relieved that an expensive medical procedure had succeeded. Not the dignified emotion of a father welcoming his firstborn. The billionaire bent over the delivery bed with both hands trembling, his forehead pressed against Sophie Bennett’s exhausted fingers, and sobbed as though something inside him had finally broken beyond repair.
Their son’s tiny fist was wrapped around Brandon’s index finger.
On a table six feet away, inside a leather briefcase guarded more carefully than most people guarded their lives, lay the old leather binder—the binder containing the draft contract that said Sophie would leave the child behind.
Ten million dollars for a healthy pregnancy.
Complete confidentiality.
Full relinquishment of parental rights.
No emotional claim after delivery.
Brandon had written every condition himself.
Now, as the newborn boy tightened his grip and Sophie watched the most controlled man in Seattle fall apart beside her, Brandon lifted his wet face and whispered the words no one in that room expected to hear.
“I’m sorry.”
Sophie could barely keep her eyes open. “For what?”
“For believing I could purchase a life without destroying three of them.”
He looked at the baby, then back at her.
“I can’t enforce it, Sophie. I won’t. Take the money. Take the house. Take every share I own if you want—but please don’t leave us.”
Sophie looked down at the newborn boy resting on her chest—a tiny, perfect human being with a dusting of dark hair and his father’s sharp chin—and then up at the billionaire sobbing over her hand.
She reached out with her free arm, her fingers curling behind Brandon’s neck, pulling his wet face down until his cheek rested against hers and the baby’s small chest.

“You silly, foolish man,” Sophie whispered, her own tears finally spilling over her lashes, warm and sweet. “I told you months ago... we don't have a contract. We have a family.”
Dr. Vance quietly motioned to the four nurses. Without a word, the medical team stepped back, pulling the privacy curtains shut around the bed, leaving the three of them alone in the golden morning light.
