Chapter 6 - The Midnight Knock

At 2:15 in the morning, Blackthorn House—as the locals called the Lake Forest estate—was dead silent.

Alexander Moretti sat alone in his dark study on the second floor. He hadn't gone to bed. He had spent the last four hours staring at a small, yellow plastic toy duck with a missing wheel that he had found resting on the service stairs earlier that evening—left behind by a little girl who was learning how to take care of the world before the world had a chance to break her.

A soft, sharp knock sounded at his study door.

Alexander frowned. Lawrence never knocked this late unless something catastrophic had happened.

“Enter.”

The heavy oak door swung open slowly.

Elena Vance stood on the threshold. She had changed into a dark grey cashmere turtleneck and black trousers, her hair pulled back into a severe ponytail. In her right hand, she held a silver tray with a fresh cup of espresso.

“Working late, darling,” Elena said, her voice sweet and melodic as she stepped into the room.

Alexander didn't look up from his desk. “Put it down, Elena. I’m busy.”

“I know you are,” she replied softly, walking around the mahogany desk until she stood right beside his chair. She set the cup down, but instead of stepping back, she placed her hand lightly on his shoulder. “You’ve been working yourself to the bone for three years, Alexander. Obsessing over ghosts. Letting strangers into our home.”

Alexander stiffened. He turned his head slowly to look up at her. “What are you talking about?”

“The cleaning woman. And her bastard child,” Elena said, her voice dropping its artificial sweetness, revealing the sharp, glacial malice underneath. “You’ve been spending your evenings visiting their hovel in Cicero, bringing them food, acting like a domestic savior. Have you completely lost your mind, Alexander? You are the Silence. You control the Midwest. And you’re playing house with a pauper?”

Alexander stood up slowly, towering over her. His grey-blue eyes were like frozen steel.

“Watch your tongue, Elena.”

“Or what?” Elena challenged, stepping closer instead of retreating. A cold, triumphant smile spread across her face. “You’ll kill me? You can’t. My father has federal judges holding signed warrants for Moretti Freight in their safes right now. And as of tonight, the complete financial architecture of your entire empire has been transferred to the Department of Justice.”

Alexander’s heart skipped a beat. The freezing stillness of his body vanished, replaced by the lethal, coiled focus of a predator whose den had been breached.

“You betrayed us,” Alexander whispered, his voice dangerously low.

“I secured my future,” Elena corrected, reaching into her pocket.

Before she could pull out the Walther, Alexander’s hand shot out like a striking viper, wrapping around her wrist with bone-crushing force and slamming her forearm against the edge of the mahogany desk.

The silver pistol clattered to the floor, sliding across the Persian rug.

Elena gasped in pain, her face twisting with sudden fury. “You fool! Even if you kill me, the feds already have the files! And more importantly... your little cleaning woman and her brat won't live to see the sunrise.”

Alexander froze. His grip on her wrist tightened until she screamed.

“Where are they?” he demanded, his voice cracking with a raw, terrifying panic he hadn't felt since the day of the explosion at St. Agnes Chapel.

Elena laughed, a high, hysterical sound of absolute triumph. “I sent two of my father’s private enforcers to the service quarters twenty minutes ago. By now, Mrs. Romano and her little darling are sleeping very, very soundly. Permanently.”

May you like

Alexander didn't hesitate. He shoved Elena back with such force that she crashed hard against the bookshelves, sliding down to the floor in a heap of crumpled silk.

He didn't look back. He sprinted out of the study, throwing open the double doors of the second-floor landing and tearing down the grand staircase toward the service wing like a man possessed.
