Chapter 8 - The Tribunal of Lake Forest

The grand salon of the Lake Forest mansion was illuminated only by the dying embers of the massive stone fireplace and the cold, gray moonlight filtering through the French doors.
Elena Vance stood by the grand piano, holding a glass of cognac she had retrieved from the study. Her breathing was steady, her expression composed. She expected her father’s enforcers to return successful, or failing that, for the federal marshals to raid the estate by dawn with the digital evidence she had provided.
The heavy double doors of the salon swung open.
Alexander Moretti walked inside.
He didn't look like a defeated man facing federal indictment. He looked like the Angel of Death. His dark coat was splashed with rain, his hands were bare, and his eyes burned with an icy, supernatural intensity that made Elena’s breath hitch in her throat.
“Where are my men, Alexander?” Elena asked, trying to keep her voice steady as she set her glass down on the piano. “You can’t kill me. My father’s task force knows I’m here. If I don't check in by three in the morning, federal agents will surround this entire estate.”
Alexander stopped ten feet away from her. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a small, yellow plastic duck with a missing wheel, and placed it very carefully on the edge of the grand piano.
Then, he reached into his other pocket and pulled out a heavy, secure flash drive—the master backup of Elena’s financial data exports, retrieved directly from the basement bunker.
Elena’s face lost every trace of color.
“Where... where did you get that?” she whispered.
“Lawrence is dead,” Alexander said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. “You murdered a man who served my family for thirty years. You leaked classified syndicate files to federal prosecutors. And you sent hitmen to murder a working mother and a three-year-old child in my home.”
“I did it for us!” Elena screamed, her composure finally shattering as panic tore through her veneer of sophistication. She lunged forward, grabbing the lapels of his coat. “We could have ruled this city together, Alexander! You and me! Not mourning ghosts in a limestone tomb! I gave you the roadmap to take over the entire Midwest!”
“You gave me nothing,” Alexander replied, his voice as cold as the waters of Lake Michigan. “Except a reason to remember who I am.”
He reached out, his strong fingers wrapping around her wrists, unhooking her hands from his coat with absolute, effortless strength.
He didn't strike her. He didn't have to.
From the dark French doors behind Elena, the heavy iron security gates of the estate clanked open. A line of six black tactical vehicles rolled silently onto the limestone courtyard, their headlights cutting through the mist.
Men in heavy tactical gear stepped out, but they weren't federal agents. They were Alexander’s inner circle—capos and security commanders from every corner of the Chicago syndicate, led by old Marcus, the veteran captain who had guarded the docks for decades.
The heavy glass doors of the salon slid open.
Marcus stepped inside, carrying a heavy steel briefcase and a black leather ledger. He looked at Elena with eyes devoid of any human pity, then turned to Alexander.
“The federal server proxy has been purged, Boss,” Marcus reported crisply. “Every file Miss Vance exported has been rerouted to a dead-drop server in the Atlantic. The task force has nothing. Judge Vance has been notified that his daughter is taking an extended, permanent vacation in the Swiss Alps.”
Elena staggered backward, her back hitting the edge of the grand piano. “No... no, you can't—my father is a federal judge—you can't just—!”
“You are finished in Chicago, Elena,” Alexander said, turning his back on her as he walked toward the roaring fireplace. “By sunrise, you will be on a private freighter bound for South America. You will never set foot in the United States again. If you ever breathe my name or the name of anyone in my house, the sea will reclaim you before you reach the equator.”
Elena opened her mouth to scream, but two of Alexander’s enforcers stepped forward, placing heavy hands on her shoulders and leading her silently out of the grand salon into the misty Lake Forest night.

The heavy doors closed behind her.
Silence returned to the mansion.
