Chapter 10 - The Unbreakable Crown (Happy Ending)

The sunset over Lake Michigan was a breathtaking canvas of deep orange, violet, and gold.
Sitting high above the water on the Navy Pier Ferris wheel, Emma sat between David and me in the glass gondola. She was four and a half years old now, her brown curls cascading past her shoulders, crowned by a tiara of pink plastic flowers she had won at a carnival game earlier.
David held a box of chocolate teddy bears in his lap, offering one to Emma with a gentle smile. "Here you go, Princess Emma."
"Thank you, David!" Emma squealed, taking the bear and taking a happy bite.
I looked out through the glass window at the glowing skyline of Chicago—the city that had once held so much pain for us, but had now become the backdrop of our freedom, strength, and joy.
I reached out and touched Emma’s soft curls, feeling the warmth of her head beneath my fingers. The scars from the razor cuts were completely gone, replaced by a crown of hair that would never be shaved in shame again.
My phone chimed softly in my purse. It was an automated update from my legal monitoring service:
DOC SENTENCE STATUS: Inmate Margaret Dawson’s petition for early parole has been formally DENIED by the state board. Next review date: July 2030.
I smiled quietly, closed the screen, and slipped the phone back into my bag. The past was locked behind iron bars where it belonged. The present was warm, beautiful, and filled with love.
David reached across the seat, his fingers gently interlocking with mine. He looked at me with deep, quiet devotion. "You look so peaceful, Claire."
"I am," I said, looking from David to my beautiful daughter, who was laughing as she watched the boats gliding across the golden water below. "I really am."
Emma leaned against my side, tucking her head under my arm, her soft curls brushing against my chin.
"Mommy?" she whispered softly.
"Yes, my sweet girl?"
"Our home is happy now," Emma said, her brown eyes looking up into mine with complete, unwavering trust.

I pulled her close against my heart, pressing a long, warm kiss into her sweet brown curls.
"Our home will always be happy, my love," I promised softly as the Ferris wheel rose higher into the golden evening sky. "Always and forever."
