Chapter 4 - The Strike of the Law

At 9:00 AM on Monday morning, the peaceful morning routine inside our Chicago apartment was shattered by the deafening sound of heavy pounding on the front door.

Margaret was sitting in the dining room, sipping tea while reading a magazine. Richard was watching the morning news, while Lauren was getting ready to leave for her part-time retail job.

"Who on earth is making that racket?" Margaret grumbled, setting her teacup down and walking toward the foyer. "If that's Claire coming back to apologize, she can wait outside in the cold a bit longer."

Margaret pulled open the door, a scowl fixed on her face.

The scowl vanished instantly.

Standing in the hallway were four uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department, accompanied by two detectives from the Special Victims Unit and an official from Child Protective Services.

"Margaret Dawson?" the lead detective asked, holding a clipboard and an official folder.

Margaret blinked, flustered. "Yes? What is the meaning of this?"

"I am Detective Vance with the CPD," the detective announced in a loud, authoritative voice. "We have an arrest warrant for you, Richard Dawson, and Lauren Dawson."

Richard rushed into the hallway, his face red with anger. "What the hell are you talking about? Arrest warrant for what?!"

"Richard Dawson, you are under arrest for domestic battery and felony assault," Detective Vance declared, stepping into the apartment as two officers immediately moved past Margaret and pinned Richard’s arms behind his back, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

"Get your hands off me!" Richard roared, struggling against the officers. "This is my home! I am a retired officer of the court!"

"You are in the residence of Claire Dawson," the detective corrected coldly. "And we have video evidence of you assaulting her on Friday night."

Margaret gasped, clutching her chest. "Video?! What video?! She's lying!"

A female officer stepped up to Margaret, pulling her hands behind her back. "Margaret Dawson, you are under arrest for felony child abuse, unlawful restraint, and torture of a minor."

"Torture?!" Margaret shrieked, her composed facade completely crumbling into hysterical panic. "It was discipline! She stole my gold bracelet! I have the right to discipline my granddaughter!"

"Lauren Dawson!" another officer called out, walking down the hallway toward the guest room.

Lauren stepped out of her bedroom, her phone in her hand, her face white as snow. "What is going on?!"

Detective Vance held up a search warrant. "We also have a search warrant for your personal belongings regarding grand larceny and filing a false police report."

Before Lauren could scream, two officers moved past her into her bedroom. Less than three minutes later, an officer walked out carrying a black velvet jewelry box recovered from Lauren’s closet.

Inside was Margaret’s missing gold heirloom bracelet—along with three stolen credit cards belonging to Daniel, a pawn shop receipt for a diamond ring Margaret had lost two months prior, and four thousand dollars in undeclared cash.

Margaret stared at the velvet box in utter disbelief, her jaw dropping as she looked at her daughter. "Lauren... you... you had my mother's bracelet?"

Lauren burst into frantic tears, covering her face. "Mom, I'm sorry! I owed money to a credit company! I was going to pawn it!"

"You let me... you let me do that to Emma for your theft?!" Margaret screamed, her voice cracking in pure, horrific realization.

"Save it for the station," Detective Vance ordered sternly. "All three of you are coming with us."

As the three members of the Dawson family were paraded down the carpeted hallway of the luxury building in handcuffs, neighbors opened their doors to watch in shock. Sitting in the lobby, watched over by a police officer, was Daniel.

He sat on a bench with his head in his hands, sobbing silently as he watched his father, mother, and sister led away in police cruisers.

He had tried to stop them. He had tried to protect his family. But the web of lies, abuse, and theft they had spun had finally collapsed—and it was going to crush every single one of them.
