Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the penthouse had been converted into a command center.
Derek Vance sat at the glass dining table surrounded by four laptops, two encrypted satellite phones, and a mountain of legal folders. Julian stood by the window, a cup of black coffee in hand, wearing a pristine navy suit, looking as rested and immaculate as if he hadn't been up until dawn orchestrating a tactical assault.
Maya emerged from her quarters down the hall, dressed in a plain grey sweater and dark jeans. She felt like a ghost walking among living men.
Derek raised a hand in greeting, giving her a sympathetic, tired smile. "Morning, Maya. Coffee's fresh."
"Derek," she said softly, walking over. "I'm sorry about last night. For getting you caught in the middle."
"Don't worry about it," Derek said, casting a quick glance toward Julian’s back. "Honestly, seeing the boss actually express a human emotion like terror was worth the overtime."
Julian didn't turn around, but his voice carried clearly across the room. "Keep talking, Vance, and your bonus goes to funding the bakery's new ovens."
Derek immediately muted his microphone and typed furiously.
Maya walked up beside Julian at the window. The skyline of Chicago stretched out beneath them, bathed in clear, cold morning sunlight. "What are you doing, Julian?"
"Cleaning up dirty laundry," Julian said smoothly, taking a sip of his coffee. "Varga’s firm filed a fraudulent lien against your credit profile three weeks ago. They also paid off a clerk in the municipal court to skip the formal service of process, which means they were twenty-four hours away from getting a default judgment to seize your personal bank accounts."
"How did you find all that in four hours?"
"I have better lawyers than the city of Chicago," Julian replied simply. He set his cup down on the marble sill and turned to her. "At eleven o'clock, Varga's primary representative is coming here."
Maya felt a spike of panic. "Here? To the penthouse?"
"He thinks he's coming to collect a fifty-thousand-dollar cash settlement from a wealthy benefactor," Julian said, a cold, ruthless smile touching the corners of his lips. "He doesn't know who the benefactor is. I used an offshore holding company to set up the meeting."
"Julian, these men are dangerous," Maya pleaded, taking his hand impulsively. "Varga has people everywhere. You don't need to get involved in a street war over my debt!"
Julian looked down at her small hand wrapped around his. His smile softened, losing its predatory edge, replaced by something fierce and protective.
"Maya," he said gently, "I run the distribution logistics for half the Midwest. Anthony Varga is a bottom-feeder who terrifies defenseless women because he lacks the intelligence to operate at a higher level. He isn't a threat to me. He is an annoyance."
He stepped closer, his thumb brushing the inner skin of her wrist, where her pulse was fluttering like a trapped bird.
"You are going to sit in my office down the hall," Julian instructed. "You will keep the door closed. You will let me handle this. And when it is over, you are going to let me buy you breakfast."
May you like
"And if I refuse to hide in the office?" Maya challenged, a spark of her old stubbornness flaring up.
Julian’s eyes glinted with quiet amusement. "Then I will have Derek lock you in. Don't test me, Maya. I'm trying very hard to be polite today."
