Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Betrayal

The ride back from the Drake was charged with an electric, overwhelming tension.

Julian hadn't spoken a word since they stepped into the Maybach. He sat staring out the window, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles looked like iron bands.

When they reached the penthouse, Maya didn't wait for him to open her door. She stepped out, kicked off her high heels, and walked straight into the main living room, tossing her clutch onto the glass table.

"Future Mrs. Croft?" she called out, turning to face him as he entered the room.

Julian stopped, stripping off his bowtie and unbuttoning his top collar. "It was the fastest way to shut Sal’s mouth permanently."

"Was it just a tactic, Julian?" Maya asked, her voice trembling slightly, her green eyes searching his face with frightening vulnerability. "A convenient threat to drop in a ballroom to protect your pride?"

Julian looked at her, his dark eyes ablaze with emotion. He walked across the room with long, aggressive strides until he was standing inches from her, his breathing heavy.

"Do you think I play games with my name, Maya?" he demanded, his voice thick with passion. "Do you think I bring women to public galas? Do you think I let men like Sal Moretti see what I care about unless I am prepared to tear down the world to protect it?"

"I don't know!" Maya shouted back, tears springing to her eyes. "I don't know what is real with you! You buy my debt, you protect me from loan sharks, you dress me in silk, and you tell the world I'm yours—but every time I look at you, I wonder if I'm just another piece of territory you're defending!"

Julian grabbed her by the waist, pulling her flush against his chest, his hands digging into the silk of her gown.

"You aren't territory, Maya," he rasped, his face inches from hers, his voice breaking with a raw, desperate emotion she had never heard in him before. "You are the only thing in this miserable, filthy city that makes me feel like a human being. I haven't slept a full night in ten years until you started reading in my study. I haven't cared about coming home until I knew your shoes were sitting by the elevator."

Maya gasped, her heart leaping into her throat.

"I love you," Julian whispered, the confession tearing out of his chest like a confession from a dying man. "I love you so much it frightens me. It makes me weak. It makes me shake."

He reached down, taking her hand and pressing it flat against his chest. Beneath her palm, through the fine linen of his shirt, his heart was hammering with wild, chaotic speed—a man terrified, defenseless, and completely at her mercy.

The Mafia boss who feared nothing was shaking under her touch.

Maya’s tears spilled over her lashes. She reached up, wrapping both arms around his neck, pulling his head down to hers.

"I love you too, Julian," she sobbed against his lips. "I love you. I'm not afraid anymore."

When their lips met, the world outside the high glass windows vanished. The shadows, the debts, the dangerous men in tailored suits—everything faded into the hot, sweet consuming fire of a love that had been born in the dark and brought into the light.
