Chapter 2 - The Midnight Warrant

The red and blue lights of three LAPD cruisers flashed rhythmically against the tall, wrought-iron gates of the Vance estate.
It was nearly midnight. The peaceful, ultra-exclusive neighborhood of Bel-Air Crest was dead silent, save for the muffled whispers of neighbors peering through their second-story curtains at the rare spectacle of law enforcement at the Vance residence.
Inside the master suite, the atmosphere was quiet, warm, and heavy with protective vigilance.
Adrian sat on the edge of the plush king-sized bed. Lily had finally fallen asleep, her tiny hand clutching the collar of Adrian’s dress shirt as if she were afraid he would vanish if she let go. Noah was sleeping in a wooden crib that Adrian had ordered his personal assistants to move directly into his bedroom from the nursery downstairs.
A soft knock came at the bedroom door.
Adrian slowly unclasped Lily’s fingers, tucked the soft cashmere blanket around her chin, and stepped quietly out into the carpeted hallway.
Standing in the hallway was Detective Sarah Miller from the LAPD Special Victims Unit, accompanied by two uniformed officers and Adrian’s chief legal counsel, Marcus Vance—his older brother and managing partner of Vance & Associates.
Detective Miller, a stern woman in her late forties with sharp gray eyes and a practical dark suit, held a thick manila folder under her arm.
"Mr. Vance," Detective Miller said in a low, respectful tone. "The paramedics have completed their preliminary physical evaluation of both children. Lily has sustained soft-tissue bruising around her left wrist consistent with forceful manual restraint, as well as minor contusions on her right knee. Noah is showing early signs of mild dehydration and skin irritation from the damp wood."
Adrian’s jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked rapidly beneath his skin. "Are they in any immediate danger?"
"Physically, they will recover with proper care and medication," Miller replied. "Psychologically, we strongly recommend immediate trauma counseling for your daughter. As for your wife..."
Miller gestured down the hallway toward the grand staircase.
Down in the foyer, Vanessa was standing between two female officers. She had changed out of her ruined cream silk dress into a pair of sweatpants and a designer hoodie, but her hair was disheveled, and her face was blotchy from hours of furious, desperate crying.
"She claims you fabricated the video using AI deepfake technology," Detective Miller said flatly, a faint trace of professional disgust in her voice. "She also claims you have been verbally abusive to her for months and that she locked the children inside the doghouse as a 'temporary safety measure' because she feared for her life."
Marcus Vance let out a dry, cold laugh. "A classic DARVO tactic—Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender. Detective, my client has already provided the LAPD digital forensics team with raw, cryptographic hash-verified video files straight from the cloud server. The metadata proves the recording is authentic, unedited, and timestamped in real-time."
"I know," Detective Miller said, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt. "The District Attorney’s office reviewed the footage twenty minutes ago. An emergency felony warrant has been issued for Vanessa Vance. Charges include two counts of felony child endangerment, two counts of false imprisonment, and one count of domestic battery."
They walked down the grand staircase together.
When Vanessa saw Adrian descending the stairs alongside the police, her eyes flared with a sudden, ugly rage. The pathetic, weeping act vanished instantly, replaced by the venomous malice she had hidden behind her fake socialite smile for eighteen months.
"You think you've won, Adrian?!" she shrieked, her voice echoing through the vaulted foyer. "You think you can just throw me away like trash?! I know everything about your firm! I know where the offshore accounts are! I know about the confidential patents!"
"Take her out," Detective Miller ordered the uniformed officers.
"I’m going to take half of everything you own!" Vanessa screamed as the officers turned her around and clicked the steel handcuffs tightly around her wrists. "I signed a prenuptial agreement under duress! My lawyer will tear your life apart in divorce court! You'll be ruined, Adrian! Ruined!"
"The prenuptial agreement contains an absolute moral turpitude and criminal conduct clause, Vanessa," Marcus Vance said smoothly, stepping forward with his hands in his pockets. "Section 14B explicitly states that in the event of any documented criminal act or physical abuse perpetrated against my client or his descendants, all marital property claims, spousal support, and cash settlements are instantly voided. You leave this marriage with precisely what you brought into it—nothing."
Vanessa stared at Marcus in horror, her jaw dropping open.
"Get her out of my sight," Adrian said, his voice cold as winter ice.
The officers dragged Vanessa out through the massive front doors. The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind them, sealing the house in quiet peace once more.

Adrian turned to Marcus. "I want a top-tier private investigation firm assigned to her entire past by sunrise. Every job she ever held, every ex-husband, every bank account, every college transcript. If Vanessa has lied about anything else in her life, I want it on my desk before her arraignment."
Marcus nodded grimly. "Consider it done, brother. Go back to your kids."
