Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of Vanessa

At 2:00 PM that afternoon, the Los Angeles County Central Arraignment Court was swarming with high-profile defense attorneys, news crews, and private investigators.

News of the arrest of Vanessa Vance—the stunning, thirty-two-year-old former model and wife of tech billionaire Adrian Vance—had broken on national news four hours earlier. The horrific nature of the charges had sent shockwaves through the elite circles of Southern California society.

Inside the glass-enclosed holding cell, Vanessa sat wearing an orange county jail jumpsuit. Her manicured nails were chipped, her hair was greasy and unwashed, and her eyes were wild with desperate, white-hot fury.

Sitting across from her at the metal consultation table was Arthur Pendelton, one of the most expensive and ruthless criminal defense attorneys in Los Angeles, hired urgently by Vanessa's wealthy socialite mother.

"Arthur, you have to get me out on bail today!" Vanessa demanded, slamming her handcuffed hands onto the table. "This is absurd! It's a domestic dispute! Adrian is using his political power to humiliate me because he wants to draft a new prenuptial agreement!"

Pendelton looked at her through his thick spectacles, his face grave and completely devoid of optimism.

"Vanessa, shut up and listen to me very carefully," Pendelton said flatly. "I just met with the Senior Deputy District Attorney in Judge Harris's chambers. They are not offering a plea bargain. They are filing maximum charges."

"On what grounds?!" Vanessa shrieked. "It was two hours in a wooden playhouse! The kids are fine!"

"The 'wooden playhouse' was an unventilated doghouse in ninety-degree heat," Pendelton snapped. "The digital forensic report was submitted three hours ago. The video footage clearly shows you shoving an infant and a four-year-old child into a confined space, locking the door, and deleting security logs with clear premeditation. Furthermore, the audio captures you explicitly stating that you were going to lie to your husband."

Vanessa went pale, her jaw clenching. "Can't we suppress the video evidence?! Claim it was obtained illegally without my consent?!"

"It was recorded on cameras installed throughout a property owned entirely by your husband, connected to a server he pays for," Pendelton shook his head in disbelief at her ignorance. "There is zero expectation of privacy in a common garden area, especially when child abuse is occurring. Suppressing that video is legally impossible."

Before Vanessa could respond, the door to the consultation room opened.

Marcus Vance walked into the room, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, carrying a thick leather briefcase. Beside him was an official representative from the California State Department of Financial Protection.

"What is he doing here?!" Vanessa spat, glaring at Marcus with pure hatred. "Get him out, Arthur! He’s Adrian’s brother!"

"Mr. Pendelton, a word," Marcus said smoothly, ignoring Vanessa completely as he opened his briefcase and laid three distinct legal dossiers on the metal table.

"What are those?" Pendelton asked cautiously.

"These," Marcus said, leaning over the table, "are the results of the private background investigation my firm completed over the last twelve hours."

Marcus opened the first dossier.

"Dossier Number One," Marcus read aloud. "Vanessa’s real name is not Vanessa Sterling. It is Vanessa Kowalski. She legally changed her name six years ago in Miami after serving eighteen months of probation for grand theft and insurance fraud involving a previous elderly employer."

Vanessa gasped, her eyes flying wide open in terror.

"Dossier Number Two," Marcus continued, opening the second folder. "Prior to marrying my brother eighteen months ago, Vanessa opened four fraudulent line-of-credit accounts in Florida using her deceased aunt's Social Security number, accumulating over three hundred thousand dollars in illegal gambling debts."

"That's... that's a lie!" Vanessa stammered, her voice cracking. "That's fake!"

"And Dossier Number Three," Marcus said, dropping the heaviest folder onto the table with a loud thud. "Over the last six months, while acting as the stepmother to my niece and nephew, Vanessa wire-transferred a total of $1.2 million from the Vance Family Charitable Trust into a secret offshore shell company registered in St. Kitts. We have the banking routing numbers, the IP address signatures from her personal laptop, and the forged authorization signatures."

Pendelton turned his head slowly to look at his client. His face had gone completely white. "Vanessa... did you embezzle money from his family trust?"

"I... I was going to put it back!" Vanessa panicked, trembling violently. "I was just investing it! I was going to pay it back!"

Marcus leaned down until his face was inches away from the glass partition.

"Vanessa," Marcus whispered, his voice dripping with lethal satisfaction. "The DA is upgrading your charges by four o'clock today. You are now facing federal wire fraud, identity theft, grand larceny, and felony child abuse. You will not be granted bail. You will spend the next twenty to thirty years of your life inside a federal penitentiary."

Vanessa dropped her head onto the metal table and began to scream.
