Chapter 4 - Assembling the Force

At 7:00 AM the following morning, I didn't make breakfast. I didn't check the household schedule, nor did I arrange the fresh flowers in the foyer.

Instead, I sat in the high-floor corner office of Vance & Associates, the premier corporate litigation firm in Manhattan.

Sitting across from me was Arthur Vance—a towering, silver-haired legal titan who had spent forty years tearing corrupt executives to pieces in federal courts. He was also an old friend of Eleanor’s late father.

Arthur put down his gold-rimmed reading glasses and leaned back in his leather chair. The red notebook, the original property deeds, and the USB drive lay neatly arranged on his glass desk.

“Clara,” Arthur said, his voice deep and solemn. “I knew Eleanor for thirty years. She was a brilliant woman, but she was fiercely protective of her family’s reputation. I had no idea Julian had pushed her to these extremes.”

“Can we enforce the trust, Arthur?” I asked directly. “Can we strip him of his executive control over Sterling Enterprises?”

Arthur let out a low chuckle, a dangerous glint appearing in his eyes. “Enforce it? Clara, my dear, Julian doesn't actually own Sterling Enterprises. Based on these original land trust documents and Eleanor’s ironclad will, you are the sole legal owner of eighty percent of the underlying real estate assets that Sterling Enterprises relies on for its valuation.”

He tapped the USB drive with a well-manicured finger.

“And this video? This is definitive proof of grand larceny, corporate forgery, and elder abuse. If we present this to the District Attorney, Julian won't just lose his company; he will be wearing a orange jumpsuit for the next fifteen to twenty years.”

“No,” I said firmly.

Arthur paused, raising an eyebrow. “No?”

“A quick arrest is too merciful,” I said, leaning forward, my voice dropping into a register of icy precision. “If he gets arrested today, his lawyers will post bail, he’ll spin the narrative in the press, and he’ll blame everything on a 'tragic misunderstanding' while dragging me through years of probate court. I want him entirely ruined before he even realizes he’s under attack.”

Arthur stared at me for a moment, then a slow, admiring smile spread across his face. “What do you have in mind?”

“Tonight, Sterling Enterprises is hosting its annual 50th Anniversary Gala at the St. Regis Hotel,” I explained. “Julian flew back from Maui this morning specifically to host it. He invited two hundred of the city’s top investors, politicians, and news outlets. He plans to announce a massive $500 million public expansion project—funded by loans secured using Eleanor’s properties as collateral.”

“He’s using forged documents to secure bank loans for the expansion,” Arthur realized, catching on instantly.

“Exactly,” I said. “He thinks I am sitting at home grieving. He thinks Eleanor is still lying in her bed at the mansion. He doesn't know she died two nights ago, and he certainly doesn't know I have her key.”

“You want to hit him at the gala,” Arthur said.

May you like

“I want to strip him of his dignity, his wealth, and his freedom in front of every single person whose respect he has spent his life trying to buy,” I declared. “Can you prepare the emergency injunctions and the asset freeze orders by 8:00 PM?”

Arthur stood up, extending a hand to me across the desk. “Clara, it will be my absolute pleasure.”
