Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The fallout was swift, brutal, and absolute.
Within forty-eight hours, the news of Julian Sterling’s arrest hit the front pages of every major newspaper in the country. The video from Eleanor’s hidden camera was leaked to the press through Arthur’s office, sparking nationwide outrage over the horrific financial and emotional abuse Julian had inflicted on his mother.
Sterling Enterprises stock crashed to zero overnight. The board of directors, terrified of federal prosecution, voted unanimously to liquidate the company’s commercial assets to pay off their fraudulent bank loans.
Because the underlying real estate belonged exclusively to Eleanor’s land trust—which was now legally titled to me—I personally oversaw the liquidation.
I seized the Sterling Estate, Julian’s private jet, his luxury car collection, and every offshore account he had secretly established.
Three weeks after the gala, I sat in a high-security visitor room at the state penitentiary.
Sitting across from me behind a thick sheet of plexiglass was Julian.
He looked unrecognizable. The tailored Tom Ford suits were gone, replaced by a drab, oversized orange prison jumpsuit. His hair was messy, his eyes sunken and bloodshot, surrounded by dark circles of exhaustion. He looked twenty years older.
He picked up the heavy plastic phone receiver. I picked up mine.
“Are you happy now, Clara?” Julian’s voice rasped through the speaker, bitter and hollow. “You destroyed my company. You took my home. You left me with nothing. My own lawyers won't even take my calls because you froze my legal defense fund.”
“You left yourself with nothing, Julian,” I said calmly. “I simply delivered what you earned.”
“I gave you twenty years of luxury!” he yelled, slamming his hand against the glass. A guard stepped forward, raising a baton warningly, and Julian quickly pulled his hand back, breathing heavily. “You lived in a mansion! You wore fine clothes! And you betrayed me for a dead old woman!”
“That 'dead old woman' was your mother,” I replied, my voice steady as stone. “She loved you when you were a child. She built the foundation of your life. And you treated her like a inconvenient secret to be locked away until she died.”
Julian sneered, though his eyes lacked their old arrogance. “What about Chloe? Did you ruin her life too?”
I smiled softly. “Chloe was named as a co-conspirator in your offshore wire transfers. Turns out, she was helping you move stolen money out of Eleanor’s accounts in exchange for a percentage. She’s currently facing five years in federal prison for money laundering. She’s in the women’s facility upstate.”
Julian stared at me, his mouth opening and closing in disbelief. He had lost everything—his mistress, his money, his freedom, his name.
“The trial starts next month,” I added, gathering my handbag. “Arthur says you’re looking at fifteen to twenty years without parole. I suggest you get used to the food here, Julian. You’ll be eating it for a very long time.”
“Clara, please...” Julian’s voice suddenly broke. The anger vanished, replaced by a pathetic, desperate whine. He pressed his palms against the glass. “Please... don't leave me like this. I can change. We can start over. I’ll give you whatever you want...”
I stood up, adjusting Eleanor’s diamond choker around my neck.

“I already have everything I want, Julian,” I said softly. “I have my freedom.”
I hung up the phone, turned my back on him, and walked out of the visitor room, ignoring his desperate, muted screams behind the thick glass.
