Chapter 5 - THE SHADOW IN THE HALLS

Throughout the next twenty-four hours, Whitmore House operated under a thick cloud of tension.

Believing the troublesome maid had left the property, Arthur Pendelton focused all staff efforts on preparing the grand dining room for Malcolm Reed’s exclusive dinner party.

Silverware was polished to a mirror shine, crystal glasses were aligned with mathematical precision, and thousands of dollars worth of imported seafood were prepared in the kitchens.

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to anyone, Adrian remained hidden inside the estate’s secondary master suite—a soundproof, private observation room built into the architectural attic that had its own hidden staircases leading throughout the mansion.

Grace had agreed to stay hidden in the third-floor linen vault—a room Arthur Pendelton rarely inspected—supplied with food and keycards provided directly by Adrian.

At 7:00 PM on Wednesday evening, the sleek black limousines of six powerful Wall Street investors pulled up the long driveway of Whitmore House.

Victor Haines opened the front iron gates with grand sweeping gestures, entirely unaware that thirty minutes earlier, Adrian had personally recorded him taking a five-hundred-dollar bribe from an unverified vehicle entering the grounds.

Inside the grand dining room, under the glow of a massive crystal chandelier, Malcolm Reed sat at the head of the mahogany table, pouring vintage wine for his wealthy guests.

"Gentlemen," Malcolm announced, raising his glass with an air of unearned arrogance. "As you know, Adrian Whitmore is currently indisposed in Europe. As managing director, I have been granted full temporary power of attorney over Whitmore Global’s real estate assets."

At the side sideboard, dressed in a fresh maid's uniform provided by Adrian, Grace moved quietly among the serving staff. Her heart pounded against her ribs, but her movements were smooth and silent.

She poured water into crystal goblets, keeping her eyes lowered while her ears caught every word.

On the main table lay Malcolm's polished leather briefcase, left slightly ajar beside his seat. Inside, the corner of a thick blue leather ledger was visible—the master inventory book containing the forged entries for the stolen artwork and diverted corporate funds.

"If you sign these preliminary agreements tonight," Malcolm whispered greedily to the investors sitting near him, "we can acquire the harbor properties at twenty percent below market value before Adrian even returns to his office."

"Are you certain Whitmore won't contest this, Malcolm?" one investor asked nervously. "The man is ruthless. If he discovers a breach of trust, he’ll destroy us all."

Malcolm laughed—a cold, dismissive sound that echoed through the high-ceilinged room.

"Adrian Whitmore is a fool who thinks fear makes him invincible," Malcolm sneered, taking a sip of wine. "He sits in his glass tower, completely blind to what happens right under his nose. He doesn't see his staff, he doesn't see his accounts, and he certainly doesn't see me."

From behind the velvet curtains near the terrace doors, a shadow moved.

Grace stepped quietly toward the head of the table under the pretense of clearing a wine bucket. With lightning speed and perfect dexterity, her hand slipped beneath the flap of Malcolm's briefcase, slid the blue ledger out, and tucked it beneath the heavy folds of her serving apron.

She took three steps back toward the curtain.

Suddenly, Arthur Pendelton walked in from the kitchen hall, holding a tray of cigars. His eyes swept the room and instantly locked onto Grace.

Arthur froze, his eyes widening in shock. "You?! What are you doing here?! You were fired yesterday!"

The entire dining room went dead silent. Malcolm spun around in his chair, his face twisting into fury as he saw Grace standing near the curtain.

"What is the meaning of this?" Malcolm roared, standing up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the marble floor. "Security! Get in here now!"
