Chapter 5 - The Unexpected Ally

The following Monday, I took a massive risk. Instead of waiting for the court to grant a discovery order, I scheduled a meeting with someone I hadn't spoken to in over two years: Julian Vance.

Julian Vance was the founder of Vance Logistics—and the son of Senator Vance, the very man Ethan and Vivian had been trying so desperately to impress on our wedding day. Julian was also a fierce rival of Ethan’s firm, known throughout the business community for his rigid ethics and disdain for old-money politics.

I walked into Julian’s top-floor executive suite holding a black leather binder containing every design concept, market analysis, and revenue projection my firm had created over the past three years.

Julian Vance sat behind a massive oak desk, studying me with sharp gray eyes. He was a tall man in his late thirties, with a quiet, commanding presence that felt completely different from Ethan’s flashy, performative charm.

"Rachel Harper," Julian said, motioning for me to sit. "I must admit, I was surprised when your assistant requested an urgent meeting. My father mentioned the... sudden end to your wedding a few weeks ago."

"I’m sure your father heard the Cole family's version of the story," I said directly, refusing to look down. "That I had an emotional breakdown and ran away."

"My father doesn't care about social gossip, Mrs. Harper, and neither do I," Julian replied coolly. "What I care about is value. Ethan Cole’s mother spent twenty minutes complaining to my father at the reception venue before everyone was asked to leave. But I know your work. You handled the rebranding for Titan Financial last year. It was brilliant."

I blinked, momentarily caught off guard. "You know my work?"

"I do," Julian said, leaning back. "Which is why I was surprised when Vanguard Logistics abruptly dropped your agency last week. Vanguard is a subsidiary of a company my firm works with closely. Word on the street is that Ethan Cole made a few phone calls."

"He did," I said candidly. "He’s trying to crush my business to force me into a legal settlement. But I didn't come here to ask for pity, Mr. Vance. I came here to offer you an opportunity."

I opened my binder and slid it across his desk.

"Ethan’s firm is pitching for your new international supply chain account next month," I continued. "They are using design templates and marketing strategies that my firm created under a sub-contract that Ethan refused to pay for. If you hire Harper Creative directly, I will give you the complete, proprietary brand architecture—and I will guarantee your campaign outperforms their projection by twenty percent."

Julian looked down at the binder, turning the pages slowly. A slow, subtle smile touched the corner of his lips.

"You're making a dangerous play, Rachel," Julian murmured. "Ethan’s firm has deep pockets."

"Ethan’s firm relies on bluff and intimidation," I replied, my voice steady and iron-strong. "I rely on my talent and the fact that I have nothing left to lose except my integrity. And I will never let anyone compromise that again."

Julian closed the binder with a firm snap. "I like you, Rachel. My company will give you a six-month contract starting today. But I have one condition."

May you like

"What condition?"

"You beat Ethan Cole in court," Julian said eyes gleaming. "Because I detest arrogant men who think they can use power to crush people who work harder than them."
