Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

With the Vance Logistics contract secured, Harper Creative was not only saved from financial ruin—we were suddenly booming. The news that Julian Vance had chosen my small boutique agency over Ethan’s prestigious firm sent shockwaves through the local business community.

Ethan was furious.

Two weeks later, the preliminary court hearing for Ethan's lawsuit took place at the county courthouse.

Ethan sat at the plaintiff's table alongside two top-tier attorneys from Vance & Sterling. He was impeccably groomed, but the subtle dark circles under his eyes betrayed his stress. Across the aisle, Vivian Cole sat in the gallery, her arms crossed, glaring at me like a hawk.

My attorney, Sarah, stood up when the judge opened the floor for preliminary motions.

"Your Honor," Sarah began, her voice echoing in the marble courtroom. "Before we address the plaintiff’s motion for financial damages, we submit to the court Exhibit A—a series of certified email logs obtained through subpoena from Cole & Associates’ primary server."

Ethan’s lead lawyer frowned, leaning over to whisper to Ethan, whose face instantly paled.

"These logs," Sarah continued, placing a stack of documents on the judge’s bench, "show that Mr. Ethan Cole systematically utilized company computers, corporate email addresses, and firm resources to alter vendor contracts for a personal event. Furthermore, emails dated three days after the canceled wedding show Mr. Cole directly contacting executives at Vanguard Logistics—a business partner of his firm—threatening to terminate their corporate consulting agreements unless they dropped their contracts with my client, Harper Creative."

The judge, a stern woman in her sixties with zero patience for corporate games, adjusted her reading glasses and scanned the documents.

"Is this true, Counsel?" Judge Miller asked, looking sharply at Ethan’s lawyer.

"Your Honor... my client was acting within his personal discretion—" the lawyer began, stumbling over his words.

"Directly interfering with a former partner's independent business using corporate leverage is not 'personal discretion,' Counsel," Judge Miller interjected coldly. "It appears to be tortious misconduct and blackmail."

The judge turned her gaze directly to Ethan. "Mr. Cole, using your firm's power to sabotage a small business because a marriage fell through is an appalling abuse of authority. Not only am I dismissing your claims against Mrs. Harper with prejudice, but I am also referring these email records to the ethics committee of your firm and the State Bar."

Vivian Cole gasped loudly from the gallery. Ethan sat frozen, his jaw dropped, his face completely drained of color.

"Furthermore," Judge Miller added, leaning forward, "Mrs. Harper’s legal counsel is granted leave to file a countersuit for intentional infliction of emotional distress and tortious interference. Court is adjourned."

As the judge slammed the gavel down, Sarah turned to me with a brilliant smile. "We won round one."

I looked across the room at Ethan. For the first time since this nightmare began, the arrogant mask was completely gone. He looked small, defeated, and terrified.
