Chapter 4 - The Truth Unfolds

By nightfall, my estate in Gates Mills was transformed.
My private house physician, Dr. Harrison, arrived to examine the boys. After a thorough checkup in the master bedroom suite, he walked downstairs to the study where I was pacing back and forth.
“They’re underweight, Ethan,” Dr. Harrison reported, pulling off his stethoscope. “Claire has clearly been skipping meals to make sure she could afford formula. But overall, Noah and Liam are resilient little boys. They just need proper nutrition, warmth, and rest. Claire, on the other hand, is suffering from severe physical exhaustion and mild malnutrition. I’ve put her on an IV drip with fluids and vitamins. She needs sleep.”
“Thank you, Doctor,” I said, handing him his jacket. “Please keep this completely confidential.”
“Of course.”
After the doctor left, I walked upstairs to the guest wing. The room was warm, dimly lit by a soft bedside lamp.
Noah and Liam were sound asleep in two wooden cribs that my staff had hastily assembled near the window. Claire lay under a heavy down comforter, her arm hooked around a pillow, her face looking peaceful for the first time in over a year.
I sat down in the armchair beside her bed, staring at her face.
How had I been so blind?
When we were married, Claire was the purest light in my life. She was an elementary school teacher who volunteered at the animal shelter every weekend. She didn't care about designer clothes or luxury cars. When my business was just three guys working out of a rented garage, she had packed my lunches and stayed up until 2:00 AM helping me organize invoices.
And yet, when Richard Sterling showed me spreadsheets indicating that $400,000 had been funneled into an offshore account registered under her maiden name, I had allowed ambition and corporate stress to cloud my judgment. I had chosen to believe a millionaire investor over the woman who had slept on a broken mattress with me when we had thirty dollars in our bank account.
My phone chimed in my pocket.
It was a text message from Richard Sterling:
‘Ethan, the board meeting for the new European acquisition is set for 9:00 AM tomorrow. Don't forget to bring the signed equity transfer documents. Big day for Carter Enterprise!’
I stared at the screen, my blood boiling.
The equity transfer documents.
Tomorrow morning, I was scheduled to sign over another fifteen percent of my voting shares to Richard in exchange for his backing on a fifty-million-dollar acquisition deal. If I signed those papers, Richard would officially control fifty percent of Carter Enterprise, effectively giving him the power to vote me out as Chief Executive Officer.
He didn't just want my company. He had systematically destroyed my marriage, banished my wife, and hidden my children so that I would remain completely dependent on him.

I leaned back in the chair, my eyes locking onto the cribs where my sons slept softly.
“You picked the wrong family to destroy, Richard,” I whispered to the empty room.
