Chapter 7 - The Downfall

A clear, recorded voice filled the boardroom:
“Listen to me very carefully, Claire,” Richard’s voice echoed from the speaker, sharp and ruthless. “Ethan is moving on. He’s going to build an empire with me. If you tell him about the pregnancy, I will make sure the forensic evidence points directly to you. You’ll give birth in a state prison, and your children will grow up in foster care. Take the studio apartment in East Cleveland, keep your mouth shut, and let Ethan sign the equity papers.”
Silence stretched across the boardroom like a drawn bowstring.
Several board members turned to stare at Richard in utter disgust. The lead director, an elderly gentleman named Thomas Brooks who had been my father’s long-time friend, slowly stood up from his chair.
“My God, Richard,” Thomas whispered, his face filled with revulsion. “You blackmailing bastard.”
Richard’s composure completely shattered. He backed away from the table, his eyes darting frantically toward the door. “That recording is illegal! It’s inadmissible in court!”
“It’s perfectly admissible under Ohio civil extortion statutes, Mr. Sterling,” Frank Vance said with a cold smile. “And outside those doors are two agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, alongside officers from the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department.”
The boardroom doors opened once more.
Two federal agents walked in, holding an arrest warrant.
“Richard Sterling,” the lead agent announced, stepping up to the disgraced investor. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate extortion, and grand larceny.”
As the steel handcuffs clicked around Richard’s wrists, he looked at me, his face pale and twisted in desperation.
“Ethan! Please!” Richard begged, his voice cracking. “I built this company with you! You need my capital for the European acquisition!”
“I don't need your money, Richard,” I said, stepping up to him and looking down into his cowardly eyes. “And as of five minutes ago, the board has unanimously voted to freeze your equity shares and initiate full asset recovery proceedings. You’re finished.”

The agents dragged Richard out of the boardroom. His frantic protests faded down the hallway until the heavy glass doors closed, leaving the executive suite in absolute silence.
Claire looked at me, her shoulders relaxing as a massive weight was finally lifted from her heart. Tears filled her eyes, but this time, they were tears of triumph.
