Chapter 10 - Breathing Free

By the summer of 2026, our new life had taken deep, permanent root.
The Integrity Foundation had already helped seventeen women break free from financially abusive relationships, securing safe housing and top-tier legal representation for mothers who thought they had no way out.
On a warm Saturday evening in August, we hosted a small gathering on the back lawn of our Montauk home.
Rebecca Sloan was there, laughing over a glass of white wine with Eleanor. Marcus, the young AV technician from the country club who had since been hired as the full-time Chief Technology Officer for my foundation, was helping Tommy set up a backyard telescope to view the Perseid meteor shower.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of violet, orange, and crimson, I walked out to the edge of the bluff overlooking the ocean.
Captain ran up beside me, resting his head against my leg, while the cool Atlantic ocean breeze rushed up the cliff face.
I closed my eyes and took a deep, full breath of air.
For ten years, I had lived in a house where every breath felt borrowed, where every step was monitored, and where fear was the quiet atmosphere of our daily existence.
Now, standing on the edge of a new world we had built with our own hands, I felt the cool wind in my hair and the solid earth beneath my feet.
Tommy ran up beside me, holding his telescope tripod, his face lit up with absolute wonder as the first bright star appeared in the darkening sky above us.
"Look, Mom!" Tommy pointed toward the cosmos. "The sky is completely clear tonight."
I put my arm around his shoulders, pulling him close, kissing the top of his head.

"It sure is, Tommy," I whispered, looking out over the endless ocean. "It's completely clear."
We stood there together in the quiet twilight, breathing free, ready for every bright tomorrow waiting on the horizon.
