Chapter 5 - The Aftermath

By five o'clock that afternoon, the country club ballroom was completely empty, save for Eleanor, Tommy, Rebecca, and myself.

The catering staff was quietly clearing away the untouched champagne flutes and the towering birthday cake. Eleanor sat in her wheelchair near the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at the manicured golf greens. She was crying softly, holding a lace handkerchief to her eyes.

I walked over and knelt beside her, resting my hands on her lap.

"Eleanor," I murmured softly. "I am so, so sorry. I didn't want to ruin your seventy-fifth birthday."

Eleanor took a deep breath, wiped her tears, and looked down at me. She reached out and patted my cheek with a frail, trembling hand.

"Claire, my dear," she said, her voice shaking with emotion. "You didn't ruin my birthday. You freed this family from a monster."

She looked over at Tommy, who was sitting on a sofa nearby, eating a slice of chocolate cake with a small smile on his face.

"My son turned into a man I didn't recognize," Eleanor continued, her eyes filling with tears again. "He was cruel, arrogant, and greedy. He treated you like a servant and ignored his own child's pain. What you and Tommy did today... it took unimaginable courage."

Rebecca Sloan stepped forward, setting a fresh stack of legal papers on the small table beside Eleanor's chair.

"Mrs. Vance," Rebecca said to Eleanor, "we need to discuss your estate planning. Joe had filed papers last week attempting to declare you mentally incompetent in order to assume control of your private trust."

Eleanor let out a sharp, bitter laugh. "He tried to put me in a home?"

"He did," Rebecca nodded. "Fortunately, because of the evidence Tommy gathered, those filings have been thrown out by the probate judge. But we need to update your power of attorney immediately."

Eleanor didn't hesitate for a single second. She looked directly at me.

"Claire," Eleanor said firmly. "I want you to take full legal control of my estate and my medical decisions. Everything I have—the trust, the family properties, the investments—will be placed into an irrevocable trust for Tommy, managed entirely by you."

"Eleanor, you don't have to do that—" I started, overwhelmed.

"I do," Eleanor insisted, her gray eyes flashing with sudden strength. "Joe thought he could strip you of everything and throw you into the street. Instead, he is going to watch from a prison cell while the woman he betrayed raises his son with the fortune he tried to steal."
