Chapter 1 - The Bloodline on the Aisle

The silence hanging inside St. Jude’s Cathedral was so absolute that the flickering of the altar candles sounded like roaring flames.
Under the fifty-foot vaulted ceilings, beneath crystal chandeliers reflecting streams of golden light, the seven-year-old girl took another unsteady step forward. Her bare feet, dark with street grime and dried mud, left faint smudges on the pristine white silk runner covering the aisle. In her thin arms, she held a toddler who could not have been older than eighteen months. The baby’s cheeks were red and inflamed, her tiny body shivering under a worn, oversized denim jacket that smelled of rainwater and diesel fumes.
"Daddy..." the little girl whimpered again, her small voice cracking under the weight of sheer, desperate exhaustion. Her dark, almond-shaped eyes—unmistakable, brilliant hazel—stared directly at the man standing beside the priest.
Billionaire real estate mogul Lucas Vance felt the blood completely drain from his head. His heart hammered against his ribs so violently it felt as though his ribs would snap.
Standing beneath the arch of white orchids and import roses, dressed in a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo, Lucas looked at the child's eyes. They were his eyes. The exact same rare hazel ringed with gold that had run through four generations of the Vance bloodline. And on the little girl’s right wrist was a faded, braided red silk bracelet—a matching piece to the one sitting at the very bottom of his locked office safe.
"What is the meaning of this?!"
The shrill, furious voice of the bride, heiress Victoria Montgomery, shattered the silence. Victoria took two aggressive steps forward, her fifty-thousand-dollar satin train sweeping behind her like a battle flag. Her face, usually sculpted into a mask of cold, aristocratic composure, was contorted with disgust as she pointed a manicured finger at the trembling child.
"Security! Where is security?!" Victoria screamed, turning toward the back of the cathedral. "Why are there homeless street rats ruining my wedding?! Throw them out on the curb!"
Two heavy-set security guards in black suits rushed down the side aisles, their leather shoes squeaking against the polished marble floor. The little girl gasped, pulling her crying baby sister closer into her chest, backing away until her heel caught on the edge of a mahogany pew.
"Don't touch her!" Lucas roared.
The command tore from Lucas's throat with such raw, guttural power that the entire cathedral shrank back. The two security guards froze instantly in their tracks, their hands hovering uselessly in the air.
Lucas ignored the stunned gasps of five hundred high-society guests. He ignored his wealthy mother sitting in the front row, whose jaw had dropped open in terror. He tore off his white boutonnière, threw his jacket onto the altar steps, and unbuttoned his collar as he sprinted down the aisle toward the children.
He dropped to his knees right in front of the little girl on the dirty silk runner.
Up close, he could see the dirt smudged across her hollow cheeks, the cuts on her small ankles, and the dark circles of severe malnutrition beneath her eyes. But he also saw her face—a face he had seen every single night in his nightmares for the past two years.
"Lily...?" Lucas whispered, his voice trembling so hard he could barely articulate the syllables. He reached out with hands that had commanded multi-billion-dollar corporate empires, his fingers shaking uncontrollably as he touched her cold, tear-stained cheek. "Is that... is that you, Lily?"

The little girl let out a heartbreaking sob, her knees giving out completely. Lucas caught both children in his arms before they hit the cold floor, pulling them against his chest.
"Daddy... you came back," Lily sobbed, burying her messy head into his neck. "Mommy said... mommy said if I found the church with the big white flowers... you wouldn't let the bad men hurt us anymore..."
