Chapter 5 - Dawn of the Audit

By 7:30 AM the next morning, I was dressed in a razor-sharp charcoal Armani pantsuit, my hair pulled back into a severe, professional knot. I looked like a Wall Street prosecutor walking into a execution chamber.

I walked down the grand staircase and found Julian sitting at the kitchen island, nursing a cup of black coffee. He looked exhausted, his eyes bloodshot from a night spent on the pull-out sofa in the drafty guest house.

When he saw me enter, he stood up quickly, his expression desperate. "Elena... please. Let's talk. We can fix this. I was under so much stress with Sarah passing away, and Mom was pushing me—"

"Save your breath, Julian," I interrupted, tossing a thick manila envelope across the marble island. It slid across the surface and stopped right in front of his coffee mug.

Julian frowned, cautiously picking up the envelope. He pulled out the papers inside, and within three seconds, every drop of color vanished from his face.

It was the deed to the downtown condo, complete with the bank transfer receipts showing my personal inheritance funds being siphoned off account by account, accompanied by a comprehensive forensic accounting report compiled by my private auditor before dawn.

"Where... where did you get this?" Julian stammered, paper shaking violently in his hands.

"I own the firm that audited your corporate accounts last quarter, Julian," I said, pouring myself a cup of fresh coffee. "Did you really think your little side projects went unnoticed? Did you think I wouldn't track where my inheritance went?"

"Elena, I can explain!" he cried out, taking a step toward me. "I was going to pay it back! It was just... Sarah needed medical care before she passed, and Mia needed stability—"

"You stole from your own daughter," I whispered, leaning forward, resting my palms on the island. "You stole from the woman who gave you a home, a career, and a family. And for what? A dead mistress and a mother who treats your legitimate child like a plague rat."

The kitchen doorway darkened.

Beatrice stood there, holding little Mia’s hand. She must have heard the raised voices. Her eyes darted from Julian's terrified face to the papers on the counter, and a bitter, mocking sneer twisted her lips.

"So, the truth is out," Beatrice scoffed, stepping into the kitchen. "You found out. Good. You were always too greedy anyway, Elena. You thought your money made you queen of this castle? Julian is a Vance. A Vance provides for his blood, not an ungrateful corporate drone who prioritizes boardrooms over nursery rhymes."

I turned my head slowly to look at my mother-in-law. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't yell. I simply picked up my phone from the counter, unlocked the screen, and tapped speakerphone.

"Marcus," I said clearly into the device.

“I’m here, boss,” Marcus Webb, my lead corporate attorney and managing partner at Webb & Associates, answered instantly on the other end. “Are we pulling the trigger?”

"Pull it," I commanded. "File the emergency injunction freezing all personal and corporate assets linked to Julian Vance and Beatrice Vance. Initiate criminal proceedings for grand larceny, embezzlement, and financial fraud. And have the county child welfare services dispatch an investigator to evaluate the living conditions and neglect history of minor child Mia Vance."

Beatrice’s face went chalk white. "You... you wouldn't involve the state! That's family business!"

"Family business ended the moment you laid a hand on my daughter," I said, ending the call with a single tap of my thumb.

Before Julian or Beatrice could speak, the heavy front gates of the estate buzzed loudly, followed by the crunch of heavy tires on the gravel driveway.

Two black SUVs bearing the insignia of the State Child Welfare Bureau and the local sheriff's department rolled to a halt right outside the front doors.
