Chapter 7 - Healing the Invisible Scars

The weeks that followed were dedicated entirely to healing.

Chloe was enrolled in gentle play therapy with a wonderful pediatric specialist who helped her unpack the trauma of being locked away and neglected in her own home. At first, every time we sat down for dinner, she would automatically crawl toward the floor beneath the table, looking at me with wide, frightened eyes.

The first time that happened, my heart broke into a million pieces.

I dropped to my knees right there on the dining room rug, pulled her into my arms, and wept until my chest ached.

"Never again, baby," I whispered against her hair, kissing her cheeks over and over. "This is your home. You belong at the table. You belong right beside me."

Slowly, the fear began to recede from her little eyes. By the second month, the nervous tics stopped. Her appetite returned with a vengeance, her curls grew back thick and shiny, and her infectious, musical laughter once again filled the high-ceilinged rooms of the estate.

We remodeled the entire kitchen and dining area, tearing out the old mahogany table and replacing it with a bright, round breakfast nook where we sat side by side every morning, watching the sunrise over the garden.

My career didn't suffer—if anything, it soared. With Marcus Webb handling the final dissolution of the marriage and the corporate restructuring of my personal assets, I was promoted to Chief Executive Officer of Rossi Global Investments, securing complete financial independence and absolute security for Chloe's future.

Beatrice tried to mount a legal challenge regarding the downtown condo, claiming verbal promises made by her late husband, but her case was tossed out of court before it even reached a preliminary hearing. Stripped of her funding, she was forced to move into a modest suburban senior apartment—a far cry from the luxurious estate lifestyle she had lorded over others for decades.

As for little Mia, state child services managed to locate an aunt on her maternal side living in Oregon—a kind, stable woman who stepped forward to legally adopt her and give her the genuine, loving home she deserved, far away from Beatrice’s toxic influence and Julian’s cowardice.
