Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Past

Life at The Haven had seemed completely peaceful since Damian reorganized his entire business empire two years ago. However, the shadow of the underworld never truly fades.
On a rainy autumn evening in Baltimore, Damian sat in his study reviewing grant files for his foundation for hearing-impaired children. Clara walked in, carrying a hot cup of tea, and softly wrapped her arms around his shoulders from behind.
"Working late again, my love?" she sighed softly, running her fingers through his hair.
Damian smiled, taking her hand and kissing her palm. "I just want to ensure the hospitals in neighboring states receive enough funding for this month's cochlear implant surgeries. I owe this life a heavy debt, Clara."
Right then, the secure telephone on his desk buzzed. The screen displayed Viktor’s caller ID—now the head of executive security. Damian answered, his relaxed expression instantly vanishing into the stern demeanor of a former mob boss.
"Report, Viktor," he said sharply.
"Boss, we have a problem," Viktor’s tense voice came through the encrypted line. "The remnants of the old southern alliance, led by the Moretti family, just received massive funding from an anonymous Swiss account. They are hiring gunmen to reclaim the maritime ports you legalized. But that isn't the worst part."
Damian narrowed his eyes. "What is the worst part?"
"The digital signature on that account matches Boris’s private master key from before his imprisonment," Viktor hesitated. "Someone is using Boris’s funds to carry out his plan to eliminate you."
The air in the room chilled instantly. Clara watched Damian's reaction, her heart tightening. She knew Boris was locked away in an isolated family prison under strict supervision. If he could still move money outside, it meant there was an insider close to Damian.
At the end of the hallway, light footsteps approached. Six-year-old Lila, holding her teddy bear, wandered into the study. She had taken off her hearing device for bed, but an innate sense told her something was wrong.
Lila walked over to Damian, climbing into his lap. She gently placed her tiny palm against his left chest.
His heart was beating rapidly and violently—not from his old condition, but from the sudden blaze of anger and fear.
Lila looked deep into Damian’s eyes and signed: "Heart hurt? Or heart angry?"
Damian looked at his daughter, the ruthlessness in his eyes instantly melting away. He held her tight, resting his chin on her soft hair, and signed back: "Heart is fine. Heart is just protecting you and Mommy."

Clara stepped closer, holding Damian's hand firmly. "We overcame the storm once, Damian. We aren't alone this time."
Damian nodded, but deep down he knew this battle was no longer about power—it was about protecting the only real home he had bought with his own blood and tears.
