Chapter 9 - The Trial of Love
After that chaotic night at Baltimore Port, the remaining threat was eliminated. Elena and Don Moretti faced life sentences in maximum-security prison for terrorism, kidnapping, and attempted murder.
As for Nikolai, swift medical intervention saved his life. The poison in his tea had been planted by Elena to frame him and fracture Damian’s inner circle.
However, the traumatic event left a small mark on Lila. After her hearing aids were smashed, she grew withdrawn and feared loud vibrations whenever she wore her new devices. She clung to Clara or Damian whenever they left the house.
Clara sat on the edge of Lila’s bed, stroking her hair as she slept. Damian stepped into the room, coming up beside her.
"I was thinking..." Damian said softly, his eyes filled with sorrow. "Is my world too dangerous for you two? Perhaps... if you lived a normal life without me..."
Clara stood up, cutting him off. She looked straight into his eyes with absolute determination and unconditional love.
"Damian Volkov, what are you saying?" Clara whispered fiercely. "Do you think we are safer without you? You saved Lila. You gave us a home and a family I never dreamed of having."
"But I bring enemies, weapons—"
"And you bring love, protection, and a heart that beats for us!" Clara grabbed his hand, pressing it against her own chest. "Can you feel it? My heart beats for you. Lila loves you not because you were a mob boss or an heir, but because you are her father with the special heart."
Damian looked at her, realizing Clara’s courage rivaled any soldier's. She was his anchor, his peace, and his salvation.
He pulled Clara into his arms, kissing her deeply—a kiss filled with gratitude and devotion.
The following morning, Damian made a monumental announcement. He summoned an international press conference.
