Chapter 1 - The Shattered Mirror

The silence in the grand foyer of the Castillo mansion was heavy enough to crush bone. The sound of Alejandro’s voice had stripped the arrogance right out of the air, leaving behind a sharp, biting tension that made the remaining house staff scatter like ghosts into the shadows.
Vivian Moretti’s manicured fingers tightened around the stem of her crystal wine glass so hard I thought the glass would snap. For three years, she had reigned supreme over this estate, playing the part of the devoted family friend who had gracefully stepped in to "comfort" a grieving billionaire when his beloved wife, Elena, vanished off the face of the earth. She had calculated every move, woven a web of deceit so tight she thought it was completely airtight.
And now, with a single dropped bucket of water, her entire kingdom was burning down.
"Alejandro, darling, let's not be dramatic," Vivian forced a brittle, high-pitched laugh, taking a tiny step backward as he advanced up the marble steps. Her eyes darted toward the heavy front doors, calculating her escape routes. "You've been under an unimaginable amount of stress. Three years of globetrotting, chasing phantoms in Rome, Vienna, Paris... it's broken your judgment. Look at her! She’s clearly an imposter, or some mentally unstable vagrant who slipped into the staff quarters—"
"Shut your mouth, Vivian."
The three words didn't roar. They dropped like slabs of granite, cold and absolute.
Alejandro didn't even look back at her. His gaze remained locked on Elena, who was still kneeling on the damp marble, her body trembling with a mixture of terror and a strange, long-buried ember of defiance. Slowly, deliberately, Alejandro dropped to one knee right beside her, ignoring the dirty water that soaked into the hem of his bespoke Italian trousers.
"Elena," he whispered, his voice cracking. He reached out with hands that had brokered billion-dollar mergers across continents, but right now, they were shaking. He hovered his fingers inches from her bruised cheek, terrified that if he touched her, she might vanish like smoke. "Look at me. Please."
Elena slowly raised her head. Her skin was far too pale, thin as parchment, shadowed by exhaustion and malnutrition. The vibrant, brilliant art curator he had married three years ago—the woman whose laughter used to fill these cavernous halls—was buried beneath layers of trauma. But those dark, expressive eyes were still hers.
"Alejandro..." Her voice was a dry, raspy whisper, like wind scraping across autumn leaves. "You... you shouldn't have come back today."
"This is my home," he choked out, finally letting a tear break free and slide down his jaw. "And you... you are my wife. How? How did you get here? Who did this?"
Before Elena could answer, Vivian shrieked, her composure completely shattering. "Security! Get this lunatic out of my sight! Drag her back to the service quarters! She’s hallucinating!"
Two burly private security guards, men Alejandro himself had hired years ago, rushed into the foyer from the west corridor. But the moment they crossed the threshold, they froze. They looked at Vivian, then at Alejandro kneeling on the floor, and finally at the bruised, terrified woman on her knees.
They didn't move an inch. They knew Alejandro Castillo's face when he looked like a man ready to commit murder.
"Touch her," Alejandro said quietly, standing up slowly and turning around to face the guards. He didn't raise his voice, but the dead-eyed fury in his expression made both veterans step back instinctively. "Touch her, and I will personally strip every single asset you own, blackball you from every security firm on this hemisphere, and see to it that you spend the next ten years in a federal penitentiary. Now... get out of my sight. All of you."
In less than five seconds, the foyer was cleared. Only Alejandro, Elena, and a cornered, frantic Vivian remained.
Vivian’s chest heaved beneath her silk blouse. She realized charm and gaslighting weren't going to save her. Her eyes shifted toward the grand staircase behind her, her mind racing for a backup plan—a safe, a passport, a hidden stash of bearer bonds she had skimmed off the Castillo accounts over the past thirty-six months.
"You think you've won everything, don't you?" Vivian snarled, her voice dropping all pretense of sweetness as she glared at Elena. "You pathetic little rat. I kept you alive! When I found you wandering behind the docks in Brooklyn with total amnesia, babbling about a plane crash that never happened, I brought you here! I gave you food, a roof over your head, and a job!"
Elena slowly pushed herself up from the floor, using the edge of the marble column for support. Her knees shook, but she stood tall, her eyes locking onto Vivian with a terrifying, crystal-clear intensity.

"You didn't give me a home, Vivian," Elena said, her voice growing stronger with every word. "You locked me in the basement utility room. You took away my name, my clothes, my dignity. You told me every single day that if I ever spoke to anyone, if I ever told them my name was Elena Castillo, you would cut out my tongue and throw me back into the river."
Alejandro’s breath hitched. A dark, violent sound vibrated deep in his chest. He turned his head slowly toward Vivian, and for the first time in his life, a powerful, ruthless man realized that prison was far too merciful a fate for what his eyes were seeing.
