Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a Cage

The master suite on the top floor of the mansion had been locked for three years. Alejandro had refused to let anyone touch it, keeping it exactly as Elena had left it on the morning of her disappearance—her perfume bottles lined up on the vanity, her favorite cashmere sweater draped over the velvet armchair, the unread books stacked beside the bed.
Now, we were sitting in that very room.
Except Elena wasn't in the plush king-sized bed. She sat wrapped in a warm wool blanket on the edge of the sofa, holding a steaming cup of tea with both hands while a private trauma physician, Dr. Harrison, quietly checked her vital signs.
Alejandro stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the gates of the estate below. His phone buzzed continuously in his pocket—calls from board members, frantic text messages from financial institutions freezing Vivian’s accounts, and updates from Marcus Webb, his chief legal counsel.
"Her physical condition is severely compromised," Dr. Harrison said quietly, packing his stethoscope back into his leather bag and looking up at Alejandro. "Chronic malnutrition, severe dehydration, repetitive strain injuries in her wrists consistent with heavy manual labor without protective gear, and multiple healed fractures in her ribs that were never properly set. Mr. Castillo... she hasn't just been overworked. She’s been systematically tortured."
The words felt like physical blows. Alejandro closed his eyes, gripping the windowsill so hard the wood groaned under his grip. Every second he had spent in Europe—wasting time chasing dead ends in Interpol databases, hiring private eyes who took his money and found nothing—flashed before his eyes like a cruel joke.
While he was looking across oceans, the mastermind was living in his guest wing, wearing his wife's jewelry, and forcing the real mistress of the house to scrub the floors.
"Can she travel?" Alejandro asked, his voice raw. "Can we move her to a private clinic in Zurich tonight?"
"No," Elena spoke up, her voice surprisingly firm as she lowered her teacup to the table. She looked up at Alejandro, her dark eyes flashing with a sharp, resolute intelligence that had been hidden under weeks of fear. "I'm not running away from this house anymore, Alejandro."
Alejandro turned sharply, walking across the room to kneel beside her chair. "Elena, you don't have to stay here. This place... it's tainted. We can leave right now. Let the police handle Vivian."
"The police won't find everything," Elena said, reaching out to place her cold, trembling hand over his. The skin of her wrist was rough, marred by scars from heavy cleaning chemicals and metal bindings. "Vivian isn't just a bitter socialite who wanted to steal my husband and my house. She’s connected to something much bigger. The day she kidnapped me... or rather, the day she found me after the accident... she wasn't alone."
Alejandro frowned, covering her hand with both of his. "What accident, Elena? There was no accident reported on your flight manifest three years ago. Your private charter to London... it landed safely. But you never checked into the hotel."
"Because the car taking me from Heathrow to the hotel was intercepted," Elena whispered, her eyes widening as buried memories clawed their way to the surface. "It wasn't a random mugging. The driver... he worked for Meridian Logistics. The same corporation that Vivian’s brother currently runs as chief executive."
The room seemed to drop another ten degrees.
Meridian Logistics. One of the largest shipping conglomerates in Europe, a primary competitor to Rossi Global and Castillo Enterprises. For years, our corporate families had maintained a fragile, polite truce in the global export markets. But beneath the surface, a brutal proxy war had been raging for control of transatlantic shipping lanes.
"Meridian..." Alejandro muttered, his mind racing through corporate registries, offshore accounts, and shady board maneuvers. "Victor Vance."

"Not just Victor," Elena corrected, her breath hitching. "Vivian is his legal half-sister. They kept that relationship hidden from the New York high society registries for over a decade. When our companies merged our shipping portfolios two years before our marriage, they didn't want a partnership, Alejandro. They wanted complete monopolization. And to get it, they needed to control Castillo Enterprises from the inside."
The puzzle pieces snapped together with terrifying precision. It wasn't just a domestic nightmare of jealousy and malice. It was an industrial-scale corporate hostile takeover, executed through the systematic erasure of a human life.
