Chapter 5 - Exposed in the Light

The grand ballroom of the Grand Regent Hotel was packed with over fifty journalists, news cameras, and financial analysts. The headline story of a stay-at-home mother taking over one of the state's largest shipping logistics firms overnight had captured national attention.

I stood backstage, smoothing the lapels of my tailored black blazer. Elise was resting peacefully in a crib in the green room under the watchful eye of a trusted nurse.

"You ready for this, Clara?" Arthur asked, standing beside me.

"I spent eleven years being made to feel small, Arthur," I replied, looking at my reflection in the glass. "I’m done hiding."

I stepped out onto the stage. Flashbulbs went off in a blinding storm of light. Microphones were thrust toward the podium.

"Good morning," I said, my voice steady and clear, echoing through the speakers. "I am Clara Vance, Chairwoman of Vance Logistics. I know many of you are here expecting a scandal. You’re expecting a bitter bitter family feud. But I am here today to present facts."

I tapped a remote, and the massive LED screen behind me illuminated with clear, itemized documents.

"Over the past three years, former CEO Mark Vance siphoned over fifteen million dollars from this company. He diverted funds intended for employee pensions, safety upgrades for our shipping fleet, and healthcare coverage."

Gasps echoed through the room.

"Furthermore," I continued, pressing the button to reveal signed bank transfers and personal emails, "these thefts were carefully orchestrated alongside his mother, Diane Vance, with the explicit goal of stripping the company’s assets, declaring bankruptcy, and fleeing to a non-extradition jurisdiction, leaving four hundred employees destitute."

A reporter in the front row stood up. "Mrs. Vance! Mark’s attorney, Julian Thorne, just released a statement claiming you forced an elder-abuse transfer of the family estate while recovering from childbirth! How do you respond?"

I smiled calmly and pressed the remote one last time. A video played on the screen—the security camera footage from the foyer of Willow Creek Manor from four days ago.

The entire room watched in stunned silence as Mark tossed the grocery bag of diapers at my feet, as Diane mocked my four daughters, and as Mark explicitly demanded I take my newborn and leave the house before dinner.

"That video was recorded four days after I gave birth to my fourth daughter via C-section," I said, the hall going dead quiet. "Does that look like a woman manipulating an elderly man? Or does it look like a mother defending her children from a cruel, calculated attempt to render them homeless?"

The reporters scrambled, typing frantically on their laptops and whispering into their phones. The narrative had completely flipped in less than ten minutes.

In the back of the auditorium, standing near the exit doors, I saw a figure in a disheveled suit. It was Mark. He had snuck into the back of the room. As our eyes met across the vast crowd, he looked broken, exposed, and utterly destroyed.

I didn't blink. I raised my head higher, turned back to the cameras, and continued speaking about the future of the company.
