Chapter 7 - A New Foundation

Six months later.

The spring flowers were in full bloom around Willow Creek Manor. The dark clouds that had hung over our lives had completely cleared, replaced by a sense of stability and prosperity I had never known during my marriage.

Under my leadership, alongside Victoria and Arthur, Vance Logistics had undergone a total transformation. We restored the employee pension funds, upgraded the safety standards for our driver fleet, and launched a corporate foundation dedicated to supporting mothers and children escaping domestic abuse and financial coercion.

I sat in the boardroom at headquarters, finishing a meeting with our international partners, when my assistant tapped on the door.

"Mrs. Vance, your final divorce decree and custody paperwork have just arrived from the court."

I took the thick envelope into my office and opened it. Inside were the official documents, stamped with the seal of the State Supreme Court.

Clara Vance is hereby granted full legal and physical custody of Lily, Sophia, Maya, and Elise Vance. Mark Vance forfeits all legal claims, parental rights, and estate privileges.

Attached to the back was a personal letter from Mark, sent from the state penitentiary where he was serving an eight-year sentence. Diane had been sentenced to four years at a federal correctional facility.

I opened the letter and read:

Clara,

I don't expect you to forgive me. Sitting in this cell, I finally see what my mother turned me into—and what I allowed myself to become. I thought power and wealth came from dominance and control. I was wrong. You showed me what real strength looks like. You protected our daughters when I abandoned them. You saved my father’s legacy when I tried to burn it down. Thank you for not letting me destroy our children's future.

May you like

Mark.

I folded the letter, placed it in a drawer, and locked it away. I didn't feel anger anymore. I didn't feel vengeance. I only felt peace.
