Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

At 8:45 PM, the lights in the grand ballroom dimmed slightly. A spotlight struck the mahogany podium on the main stage, where a massive digital screen displayed the logos of Oseni Hospitality and Vanderbilt International Holdings.
Arthur stepped up to the podium, bowing gracefully as polite, polite applause rippled through the two hundred guests. He adjusted his microphone, his voice booming effortlessly through the surround-sound system.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Arthur began, spreading his arms wide. “Twenty years ago, when tragic fate took my beloved brother and almost stole my nephew Henry from us, I made a sacred promise to preserve the Oseni name. Today, as we finalize this historic three-billion-dollar merger, I can proudly say that promise has been fulfilled.”
In the front row, the lead investor from Zurich pulled a fountain pen from his pocket, ready to sign the documents resting on a velvet table beside the stage.
“Before you sign that document, Arthur,” a voice echoed through the room.
It didn't come from a microphone on stage. It came from the main floor speakers.
Arthur froze, his smile stiffening. “Henry… if this is a toast, please wait until after the formal signing—”
“It’s not a toast,” I said, stepping out of the crowd and walking slowly down the center aisle toward the stage. “It’s an audit.”
The room went dead quiet. Guests turned in their seats, whispering furiously.
Arthur’s face tightened with genuine anger. He signaled to two heavy-set corporate security guards standing near the stage doors. “Security, Mr. Oseni is clearly overwhelmed. Escort him to his private suite.”
The guards stepped forward, but before they could lay a hand on me, four off-duty police officers in formal suits stepped in front of them, holding up federal badges.
“Stay right where you are,” Officer Miller said sternly.
Arthur gasped, taking a step back from the podium. “What is the meaning of this insolence?”
“The meaning, Arthur,” I said, stepping onto the stage and turning to face the crowd, “is that twenty years of lies end tonight.”
I picked up a remote control from the podium and pressed the main button.
The massive digital screen behind Arthur flickered. The corporate logos vanished.

In their place appeared a high-resolution scan of the 2006 purchase order for the GPS tracking device—bearing Arthur Oseni’s bold, dark signature—followed by the official autopsy report of David Bennett, and the forensic ledger showing the seventy-five-thousand-dollar bribe paid to the investigating detective.
A collective gasp echoed across the ballroom. The Swiss investor slowly put his fountain pen back into his pocket.
