Chapter 6 - The Freezing Order

Forty-eight hours after the raid at Vance Manor, the financial world of Manhattan collapsed into chaos.
Front-page headlines blared across national news outlets: CALLAHAN CAPITAL CEO ARRESTED IN DOUBLE MURDER ATTEMPT, EIGHTEEN-YEAR CONSPIRACY UNCOVERED IN VANCE DYNASTY, MISSING HEIRESS FOUND ALIVE IN MANHATTAN.
In a high-rise office building overlooking Wall Street, Celeste sat at the head of a massive mahogany conference table. Surrounding her were forensic accountants, federal prosecutors, and Julian Ross. Beside her, dressed in a sleek charcoal suit, sat Anna, her confidence growing stronger with every passing hour.
"The federal judge signed the emergency freezing order thirty minutes ago," Julian announced, placing a stamped court order on the table. "Every bank account, property asset, shell company, and investment portfolio associated with Lydia Vance, Marcus Callahan, and Callahan Capital has been impounded by the Department of Justice."
"What is the total valuation of the seized assets?" Celeste asked, her tone crisp and professional.
A senior forensic accountant leaned forward, opening a thick binder. "Including the inflated stock values from Vance Global, the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, and the real estate holdings... the total estate is valued at four hundred and twenty million dollars."
Anna gasped softly, looking at Celeste. "Four hundred... million?"
"That money was built on eighteen years of blood, theft, and lies," Celeste said flatly. "Julian, how much of that legally belongs to Anna and me under our father's original trust?"
"Under state probate law, because the original transfer of assets was conducted via felony fraud," Julian explained, a triumphant smile touching his lips, "the entire structure of Vance Global is dissolved. One hundred percent of the original estate, plus eighteen years of compound interest and punitive damages, reverts directly to you and Anna as equal co-trustees."
"What about Marcus’s personal assets?" Celeste inquired.
"Seized to satisfy civil judgments," Julian replied. "His firm is bankrupt. His personal accounts are zeroed out. By the time the federal prosecutors are finished with him, he won't even be able to afford a court-appointed lawyer."
A knock sounded at the conference room door.
ADA Sarah Sterling stepped inside, carrying a thick manila folder. She looked at Celeste and Anna with a expression of deep respect.
"The grand jury just returned a thirty-eight-count indictment against Lydia Vance and Marcus Callahan," Sterling declared. "Grand larceny, conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping via fraud, tax evasion, and obstruction of justice. Given the overwhelming physical evidence in the ledgers and the DNA verification of Anna’s identity, the judge has denied bail for both defendants."
"They're staying in prison?" Anna asked quietly.
"They will remain in federal custody until trial," Sterling confirmed. "And based on the charges, they are facing a mandatory minimum of thirty years in federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole."
Celeste stood up, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the city. The rain had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, bright blue sky. Below her, the bustling streets of Manhattan moved on, oblivious to the quiet revolution that had just taken place inside this room.
Anna walked over, standing beside her sister, resting her head gently on Celeste’s shoulder.

"We did it," Anna whispered.
"No, sweetie," Celeste said, pulling Anna into her arm and kissing the top of her head. "We're just getting started."
