Chapter 3 - The Broken Vows

The wedding garden descended into complete, unadulterated chaos.
"Four million dollars?" Olivia whispered, her mouth open in shock as she stared at Emily. "The boutique firm down on Fifth Street? You own Cruz & Co.?"
Olivia knew the name. Everyone in high society knew the name. Cruz & Co. had designed the interiors for the governor's mansion and three luxury boutique hotels in the state over the last two years. Olivia had tried to book them for her own wedding decor three months ago, only to be told by their secretary that the owner’s schedule was fully booked through next winter.
"David..." Olivia said, turning toward him, her hands trembling with rage. "You told me she was a penniless waitress who tried to drain your bank accounts! You told me she was a loser!"
"She was!" David stammered, reaching out to grasp Olivia's hand, but she whipped her arm back as if he were covered in fire. "Olivia, babe, listen to me! She's exaggerating! She probably took on massive debt to front this appearance! It's all a setup!"
"Enough!" Arthur Vance’s voice cut through the air like a thunderclap. He stepped between his daughter and David, glaring down at his prospective son-in-law. "David, you lied to my daughter about your past. You humiliated your ex-wife, you abandoned your own blood, and you used my family's name to flex your petty arrogance."
"Arthur, please!" David pleaded, his eyes wild with terror. "We have a business partnership! The Westside Development project—"
"The Westside project is canceled," Arthur snapped coldly. "My legal team will pull our funding by noon. And as for this wedding..."
Arthur turned to Olivia. "Pack your dress, sweetheart. We're going home."
"Dad... no!" David fell to his knees on the white runner, grabbing at Arthur's trousers. "Please! Olivia, I love you! I did all of this for us!"
Olivia looked down at David with total disgust. She reached up, tore off her diamond-encrusted veil, and threw it onto the floor at his feet. "You didn't do this for us, David. You did this for your own pathetic ego. I can't believe I almost married a monster who left his own pregnant wife to starve."
She turned on her high heels and marched down the aisle toward the parking lot, her bridesmaids scrambling behind her in an avalanche of pink chiffon and frantic whispers. The sixty guests began standing up, murmurings and sharp glares filling the space as they followed Arthur Vance off the property. Within five minutes, the terrace—which had been decorated for a quarter-million-dollar celebrity wedding—was almost entirely deserted.
Only David remained on his knees among the scattered white rose petals, his tuxedo trousers stained with dirt, staring blankly at the empty altar.
Emily stood near the stairs, watching him quietly. She didn't cheer. She didn't smile. There was no joy in watching the man who had once been her husband fall to pieces—only the quiet, profound realization that the ghosts of her past no longer held any power over her.
"Mommy," Leo whispered, pulling gently on her dress. "Can we go get ice cream now?"
Emily looked down at her three beautiful children, her heart swelling with an absolute, unshakeable warmth. She knelt down, wrapping her arms around all three of them, pressing a soft kiss against their foreheads.

"Yes, my loves," Emily said gently. "We can get all the ice cream you want."
She stood up, took their tiny hands, and turned her back on David forever.
