Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Gates

At 3:00 PM, the golden autumn afternoon was warm and breezy outside St. Jude’s Academy. High brick walls surrounded the lush, green playground, where thirty children were running and playing under the watchful eyes of four teachers.
Outside the iron main gate, David stood leaning against his rusty sedan, adjusting his coat. His eyes scanned the playground until they landed on the three figures near the wooden slide: Leo, Mason, and Ava, playing tag in their matching school uniforms.
A strange, complex pang hit David’s chest. For a second, he didn't see bargaining chips—he saw his own flesh and blood. But his desperation quickly smothered the feeling. He needed money. He needed his status back. And these children were his ticket back to the top.
He approached the iron gate, clearing his throat as a young teacher stepped near the entrance.
"Excuse me," David said, forcing a warm, fatherly smile. "I'm here to pick up Leo, Mason, and Ava Cruz."
The teacher frowned slightly, checking her digital clipboard. "I'm sorry, sir. What is your name?"
"David. David Miller," he said smoothly. "I'm their father."
The teacher’s eyes widened in immediate suspicion. Every staff member at St. Jude’s Academy had been briefed weeks ago by the head of security regarding Emily Cruz’s high-profile family.
"Mr. Miller," the teacher said calmly, stepping back toward the internal intercom. "Their mother, Mrs. Cruz, is listed as their sole legal guardian. Your name is not on the authorized pickup list."
"Look, there's been a misunderstanding," David pressed, his voice hardening as he reached out to grip the iron bars of the gate. "I'm their biological father! I have a right to see my children! Call them over here right now!"
"Sir, I need you to step away from the gate," the teacher commanded firmly, pressing a red button on her wall unit.
Over by the slide, four-year-old Mason turned his head at the sound of the loud voice. He looked toward the gate, seeing the angry man shouting at their teacher.
"Leo," Mason whispered, grabbing his brother's arm. "That's the loud man from the wedding."
Leo looked up, his brow furrowing. "The mean man who made Mommy sad?"
"Yeah," Mason said, his small face tightening into a look of fierce protectiveness. He grabbed his little sister Ava's hand, pulling her behind him toward the playground shelter. "Stay back, Ava. We don't talk to him."
"Mason! Leo! Ava!" David yelled through the bars, waving his arms frantically. "It's your dad! Come here! I have toys for you!"
Before David could take another step, the deep sound of a high-performance engine roared down the street.
A sleek, midnight-blue Range Rover pulled up directly behind David’s beat-up sedan, cutting off any path of exit.

The driver's door opened, and a tall, broad-shouldered man in a bespoke charcoal suit stepped out. It was Julian Sterling’s youngest son and head of Sterling Global Security—Gabriel Sterling. Gabriel was six-foot-two, a former military prosecutor, with sharp dark eyes that held zero mercy.
Beside Gabriel, the rear door opened, and Emily stepped out, looking regal and terrifyingly calm.
