Chapter 5 - The Glass Castle

The lobby of Romano Tower was an enormous, intimidating cathedral of white Italian marble, polished chrome, and sixty-foot glass walls overlooking the Chicago River.

The air inside smelled expensive—a mix of imported orchids, clean wax, and high-end air filtration.

In the center of the grand lobby stood a security desk shaped like a silver crescent moon, staffed by three tall security guards in pristine black uniforms.

At 4:00 PM, the heavy glass revolving doors pushed open.

Hannah walked in slowly, leaning heavily on Maya’s shoulder. Hannah looked pale as a ghost, her threadbare coat pulled tightly around her thin frame, her boots dragging across the immaculate floor. Beside her walked Maya, holding a small plastic bag containing their essential medicine and documents.

The moment the two impoverished figures stepped onto the white marble floor, the head security officer, a broad-shouldered man named Vance, straightened his back, his eyes narrowing in immediate disgust.

"Hold it right there," Vance commanded, stepping out from behind the desk and walking toward them, his hand resting casually on his belt. "This is private corporate property. The public concourse is across the street."

Hannah took a raspy breath, stepping forward. "Please, sir... I need to see Mr. Charles Romano. It's about his son—"

Vance let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "Mr. Romano? You want to see the CEO of a fifty-billion-dollar corporation without an appointment? Do you know how many beggars walk off the street claiming they have business with Mr. Romano?"

"It's not a lie!" Maya yelled, stepping in front of her mother, her small face fierce with rage. "His wife locked Leo by the dumpster! Leo was crying! I talk with hands! Leo begged me for help!"

Vance’s laughter cut short. His eyes flicked nervously toward the private executive elevators behind him, then back down to Maya.

What Maya didn't know was that Vance was on Victoria Romano’s private payroll. Every time Leo had an "episode" or ran away, Vance was paid handsomely to ensure no reporters or nosey bystanders asked questions.

Vance’s tone turned dangerous and icy. "Listen to me very carefully, kid. If you don't take your sick mother and get out of this building in five seconds, I will call the police and have you both arrested for criminal trespassing and corporate harassment."

"Please..." Hannah wept, grabbing Vance's arm. "Just let me leave a note for Mr. Romano! My daughter wouldn't lie about a child in danger!"

Vance grabbed Hannah by the shoulder, shoving her hard back toward the glass revolving doors. "I said get out!"

May you like

Hannah’s weak legs gave out. She collapsed onto the hard marble floor with a sickening thud, her head striking the edge of a heavy stone planter!

"MOM!" Maya screamed.
