Chapter 9 - The Diagnosis and the Miracle

Three hours later, Dr. Harrison, the chief of oncology at Northwestern Memorial, stepped out of the ICU holding a thick medical file.
Charles stood up immediately, with Maya sitting on his lap and Leo sitting beside them on the sofa.
"Mr. Romano," Dr. Harrison said, his tone serious but cautious. "We have completed a comprehensive diagnostic panel on Miss Hannah Rodriguez."
Maya’s small hand tightened around Charles’s suit sleeve. "Is my mom going to die?"
Dr. Harrison’s expression softened, kneeling down so he was at eye level with Maya. "No, sweetheart. She is not going to die."
Maya let out a long, breathless gasp, burying her face against Charles's chest.
"However," Dr. Harrison continued, looking at Charles. "Her condition is severe. She has Stage III Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, complicated by extreme physical exhaustion and malnutrition. The clinic she was attending was giving her low-dose palliative chemotherapy because she couldn't afford the targeted immunotherapy."
"Is there a treatment?" Charles signed and spoke simultaneously.
"Yes," Dr. Harrison nodded. "A new CAR-T cell therapy was approved by the FDA last month. It has a ninety-two percent remission rate for her specific genetic profile. But... it is extremely expensive, and not covered by standard insurance."
"Start the treatment immediately," Charles ordered without a second of hesitation. "Import whatever medications are needed from Europe or Asia. I will cover every single expense—medical, recovery, and long-term care."
Dr. Harrison smiled deeply. "Understood, Mr. Romano. We will transfer her to the private recovery suite immediately."
Maya looked up at Charles, her dark eyes wide with sheer, breathless disbelief. "You... you are paying for my mom’s medicine?"
Charles looked down at the little girl who had saved his son’s life, who had exposed the monster in his home, and who had brought speech back to a silent boy.
May you like
He reached out, gently wiping a tear from her cheek.
You gave me my son back, Charles signed softly. I give you your mother back.
