Chapter 4 - The True Face of Evil

The bitter truth hung in the air, heavy and poisonous.
It hadn't just been neglect. It hadn't just been petty cruelty or mother-in-law jealousy. It was a calculated, criminal conspiracy executed by my own blood to strip me of my wealth, steal my home, and reduce my wife to a powerless, terrified servant so she would never have the confidence or resources to fight back.
I turned to Emma. She was staring at Margaret, tears streaming down her face, but for the first time, her jaw was set tight.
"Emma," I said softly. "Did you know about the power of attorney?"
She shook her head slowly. "Two years ago... after you had your surgery in London... your mother brought papers to my room. She said... she said you were in critical condition. She said if I didn't sign a consent form letting her handle your local affairs, the bank would freeze your accounts and we wouldn't be able to pay your hospital bills."
Emma reached out, her rough fingers clutching my forearm.
"I signed whatever she put in front of me, Daniel," she wept. "I was so scared you were going to die! I didn't care about the money! I just wanted you to come home!"
I pulled Emma into my arms, holding her close against my chest, burying my face in her hair. The absolute, unadulterated evil of what my family had done to this innocent woman ripped through my soul. They had used her love for me—her desperate, selfless fear for my life—as a weapon to rob us both.
"You monsters," I whispered over Emma's shoulder, looking at the three of them.
"Daniel, be reasonable," Margaret tried again, taking a cautious step forward, attempting to summon whatever maternal authority she thought she had left. "We are your family. Blood is thicker than water! You can't destroy your own mother and siblings over a misunderstanding—"
"Blood?" I pulled back from Emma and looked Margaret straight in the eye. "You aren't my family. You're leeches who happened to share my DNA."
I turned to Vance.
"Vance."
"Sir?"
"At 8:00 AM tomorrow morning, I want the forensic audit report delivered directly to the District Attorney's office in Dallas. File civil lawsuits against Margaret Vance, Jennifer Vance-Miller, and Michael Vance for grand theft, forgery, fraud, and conspiracy."
"No! Daniel, please!" Jennifer cried out, dropping to her knees on the marble floor, sobbing hysterically. "My husband will leave me! We just bought a house in Austin! They'll seize everything!"
"They will seize everything," I agreed coldly. "Every car, every handbag, every watch, every dollar sitting in those offshore accounts. I am revoking every credit card, closing every trust account, and freezing every asset tied to my name."
"You can't do this!" Margaret screamed, her voice cracking as her pride finally collapsed into terror. "I am your mother! You wouldn't have this life without me!"
"I built this life despite you," I said flatly. "You have until twelve o'clock noon tomorrow to remove your personal clothing from this property. If any of you step foot on any property owned by Vance Restaurant Group after twelve o'clock, you will be arrested for trespass."

I picked up Emma's small suitcase with one hand and took her hand with the other.
Without looking back at the three weeping, screaming figures kneeling on the marble floor of the palace I had built for them, I led my wife out the front door into the cool Texas night.
