Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary

The suite at the Ritz-Carlton downtown was quiet, filled with soft light, plush white velvet furniture, and the panoramic night view of the Dallas skyline stretching out beyond the floor-to-ceiling glass.

Room service had delivered a spread of warm soups, grilled chicken, fresh fruits, and hot tea, but Emma hadn't touched a bite.

She was sitting on the edge of the massive king-sized bed, wearing a soft plush bathrobe I had requested from the concierge. Her hair was clean, wet from a long hot shower, and her rough hands were coated in thick medical healing salve I had applied myself.

I sat down beside her, taking her hands in mine.

"Tell me everything, Emma," I said gently. "Every single detail of what happened after I left."

Emma looked down at our joined hands, her thumb running over the heavy diamond ring resting on her finger.

"At first... it wasn't so bad," she began, her voice barely louder than a whisper. "The first six months after you went to New York, your mother was polite. But then you expanded to Europe... and you started spending months away."

She took a shaky breath.

"Jennifer moved in first. She said her apartment was being renovated, but she never left. Then Michael dropped out of business school and moved into the east wing. They started holding huge parties every weekend. When I tried to ask them to slow down or cut back on the spending, your mother told me I had no right to question how your family lived."

"Why didn't you call me, Emma?" I asked, my heart breaking with every word. "Why didn't you tell me on the phone?"

"I tried, Daniel!" tears filled her eyes again. "Do you remember two years ago, when I called you crying and said I wanted to come visit you in Paris?"

The memory flashed through my mind—a quick fifteen-minute call between international board meetings. "Yes... I remember. I told you I was traveling too much between cities and it was better for you to stay home where it was comfortable."

"Your mother was standing right behind me during that call," Emma wept. "She had her hand on my shoulder. Before I picked up the phone, she told me that if I complained to you, if I made you stressed while you were negotiating your biggest European deal, you would get distracted, the deal would fail, and it would be my fault if you lost everything. She said... she said men like you leave wives who become burdens."

A dark groan escaped my throat. I pulled her into my arms, burying my face against her neck, holding her so tightly I could feel every beat of her trembling heart.

They had weaponized her devotion to me. They had convinced her that staying silent and enduring abuse was the only way to protect my success.

"I am so sorry, Emma," I choked out, tears finally breaking free from my own eyes. "I was so focused on building an empire to prove I was worthy of you... that I left you in a cage with wolves."

May you like

"You're home now," she whispered, her hands coming up to hold the back of my head. "You came back for me."

"I came back," I promised, pulling back to look into her eyes. "And I am never, ever leaving you again."
