Chapter 7 - THE LAND OF SUNSHINE

Three months later.

The tropical sun shone brightly over the lush, emerald-green coast of Mérida, Yucatán. The air smelled of sweet wild orchids, warm ocean breeze, and fresh earth.

A large crowd had gathered near the edge of a massive, beautiful nature reserve. Local community leaders, environmentalists, and press representatives sat under shaded white canopies, listening to the soft murmur of acoustic guitars.

Standing at the wooden podium was Valeria Mendoza.

She looked radiant. She wore a simple, elegant yellow summer dress, her skin glowing with health and happiness. Gone was the pale, exhausted runaway from the airplane; in her place stood a confident, powerful woman whose eyes sparkled with purpose.

Behind her, sitting on the front row of guest seats, was Alejandro, holding a giggling, fourteen-month-old Ana Sofía on his lap. Beside them sat Valeria’s cousin, Lucía, and Lorena Sterling.

“Thank you all for coming today,” Valeria spoke into the microphone, her voice carrying warmth and confidence across the crowd. “Six months ago, this land—over five hundred hectares of pristine coastal forest—was threatened by aggressive commercial exploitation and illegal land grabs.”

The crowd listened intently.

“Today, I am proud to announce the official establishment of the Ana Sofía Eco-Preserve and Community Education Center,” Valeria declared, a bright smile lighting up her face. “This land will remain permanently protected. It will serve as a sanctuary for native wildlife and a free educational center for low-income mothers and children across Yucatán.”

The crowd erupted into enthusiastic applause and cheers.

Valeria looked toward Alejandro, whose dark eyes were beaming with undeniable pride as he clapped, bouncing Ana Sofía on his knee while the little girl clapped her chubby tiny hands together in imitation.

Through the legal victory managed by Lorena, Damián Mendoza had been forced to sign a complete relinquishment of all claims to the land trust, as well as a full surrender of parental rights in exchange for Alejandro dropping criminal fraud charges against his bankrupt firm. Damián had left Yucatán shortly after, reduced to working as a low-level clerk in a neighboring state, entirely stripped of his former influence.

After the ceremony ended, guests mingled near the flower gardens, enjoying fresh tropical fruit and sparkling juice.

Valeria stepped away from the crowd, walking toward a quiet wooden gazebo overlooking a serene blue cenote nestled among the trees.

Alejandro walked up behind her, holding Ana Sofía, who was happily chewing on a rubber teething ring. He wrapped his free arm around Valeria’s waist, pulling her gently against his side.

“You gave a brilliant speech, Director Mendoza,” Alejandro teased gently, resting his chin on her shoulder.

Valeria laughed softly, turning her head to kiss his cheek. “Director Mendoza? That has a strange ring to it.”

“It suits you,” Alejandro said sincerely. “You built something incredible here, Valeria. You turned what Damián tried to steal into a haven for hundreds of families.”

“We built it,” Valeria corrected, touching Ana Sofía’s soft cheek. “You gave us the foundation to stand on.”

“No,” Alejandro whispered, looking at her with boundless devotion. “You gave me a home. For twenty years, I thought my empire was my life. Now I know that my life is right here… with you two.”

He set Ana Sofía down on the cushioned bench in the gazebo, where the baby immediately began playing with a plush parrot toy.

Alejandro reached into his linen jacket pocket and pulled out a small, navy velvet box.

Valeria’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart beat with a sweet, fluttering rhythm as she looked from the box to his face.

Alejandro dropped to one knee on the warm wooden floor of the gazebo.
