The subtle metal-on-metal click from inside the man's heavy coat was a sound I had heard in every dusty corner of Helmand Province.

Through the dense pine forest, a thick plume of black smoke was rising into the gray winter sky, visible even through the raging blizzard.

The logging cabin was built of heavy timber, set back in a small clearing surrounded by towering blue spruce trees. Flames were already licking at the lower log structure near the rear kitchen, and the sweet, chemical stench of burning kerosene hung heavy in the freezing air.

Parked in front of the porch was a gray SUV with its engine running and rear doors wide open.

A massive man weighing at least three hundred pounds—Bear—was running out of the front door, carrying a heavy metal lockbox under one arm and a duffel bag under the other.

"Rex! Breach!" I ordered, throwing my door open before the truck had even fully stopped.

Rex shot out of the passenger door like a missile, his paws barely touching the deep snow as he crossed the clearing in three seconds flat.

Bear turned, hearing the dog, but it was far too late. Rex hit him at chest height, the three-hundred-pound man crashing backward onto the icy wooden steps of the porch, dropping the lockbox.

I vaulted over the hood of my truck, my suppressed rifle raised to my shoulder.

"Don't move!" I barked, clearing the porch steps.

Bear was struggling against Rex, reaching for a long hunting knife at his hip. I delivered a crisp front kick to his ribcage, sending him sprawling into the snow, then used my zip-ties to bind his wrists tightly behind his back before he could recover.

"Rex, hold!"

I turned toward the front door of the cabin. Smoke was pouring out of the hallway, thick and black, choking the air.

"Lena, stay in the truck!" I yelled over my shoulder.

"My mom is in there!" she screamed back from the passenger seat, tears streaming down her cheeks.
