Chapter 6 - The Cellar of Ghosts

The interior of the cabin was an inferno.

The wooden walls of the living room were popping and crackling as flames consumed the dry pine. The smoke was so dense I couldn't see three feet ahead, relying entirely on my Marine tactical training and the layout Lena had described.

"Sarah!" I roared, coughing as the acrid smoke filled my lungs. "Sarah Miller!"

From the rear kitchen came a faint, desperate banging against metal.

"Help!" a woman's voice screamed, raspy and weak. "Help us! The door is locked from the outside!"

I ducked beneath a falling, flaming rafter and kicked open the heavy swinging door into the kitchen.

The floor near the stove was engulfed in blue kerosene flames. Standing behind a heavy iron mesh screen in the corner was a thin, pale woman with hollow cheeks and bruised arms—Sarah Miller.

Behind her, lying on a cot in the small cellar alcove, was a man in a faded military field jacket, his hair long and graying, his eyes staring blankly at the burning ceiling.

Marcus.

My squad leader.

"Sarah!" I shouted, grabbing a heavy cast-iron skillet from the counter and using it to smash the padlock holding the iron cellar gate shut.

CRACK! CRACK!

The lock gave way. I threw the gate open.

Sarah collapsed into my arms, weeping hysterically. "Lena... where is my Lena?!"

"She's safe! She's in my truck with my dog!" I yelled over the roar of the fire. "We have to go NOW!"

I sprinted into the cellar alcove, grabbing Marcus under his shoulders. He was shockingly light, his body emaciated from years of captivity and forced sedation.

"Marcus!" I shook him. "Marcus, it's Daniel! Mercer! Sangin, 2018!"

For a fraction of a second, the dull glaze in Marcus Vance's blue eyes cleared. He looked at my face, his cracked lips trembling.

"Mercer...?" he whispered, his voice barely a rasp. "You... you came back for me?"

"Never leave a man behind, Staff Sergeant," I said, tears burning my eyes as much as the smoke. "Now help me stand!"

With Sarah supporting Marcus's left side and me slinging his right arm over my neck, we dragged my old squad leader out of the burning cellar, stepping through the flames toward the front entryway.

Just as we reached the living room, the main roof beam groaned under the intense heat.

CRACK-BOOM!

A flaming six-by-six timber beam collapsed directly in front of the front exit, blocking our escape with a wall of fire!
