Chapter 4 - The Wellington Club

At 8:15 PM, the private dining room on the third floor of the Wellington Club smelled of expensive cigars, aged steak, and dry-aged arrogance.

Richard Haverstock—a thick-set man with silver hair, a custom suit, and eyes like a cold fish—sat at the head of a mahogany table, cutting into a rare filet. Across from him sat Fowler, the Corvin Group’s operations director, sweat glistening on his forehead despite the air conditioning.

"Is the girl secured?" Haverstock asked, chewing slowly.

"She’s panicked," Fowler stammered, pulling a silk handkerchief from his pocket and wiping his brow. "She was at her desk all afternoon staring at the envelope. She knows if her father's record goes public, she’s facing federal fraud charges as an accessory."

"Good," Haverstock said, setting his fork down. "When Yusef comes to the table tomorrow morning, we don't just take the logistics division. We take the Gibraltar clearing lines. The Corvin empire has been run by that arrogant bastard for long enough. It's time it had proper management."

The heavy double doors of the private dining room didn't knock. They simply swung open.

Yusef Corvin walked inside.

He wore a tailored charcoal suit, his hands tucked casually into his pockets, his posture relaxed, as if he were dropping by a casual pub on a Sunday afternoon.

Behind him walked Sena Dark.

She wore a breathtaking, high-collared dress of deep sapphire silk that Yusef’s personal stylist had delivered to the office twenty minutes earlier. Her dark hair was swept up, revealing the long, elegant line of her neck, and her gold-flecked eyes were bright, fierce, and entirely devoid of fear. Her left forearm was neatly bandaged under her sleeve, but she carried herself like a queen stepping onto a battlefield.

Fowler choked on his wine, scrambling backward so fast his chair screeched against the hardwood floor. "Yus... Mr. Corvin!"

Haverstock froze, his eyes darting from Yusef to Sena, his smug expression hardening into a glare. "Corvin. This is a private room."

"Not anymore," Yusef said smoothly, walking to the foot of the table. He pulled out a leather armchair, stepping aside to let Sena sit first.

Sena sat down with absolute, icy grace. She placed a thin, silver flash drive on the center of the white tablecloth, right beside Haverstock's wine glass.

"What is this nonsense?" Haverstock demanded, looking at the flash drive, then at Sena. "Miss Dark... I believe you have some explaining to do regarding your father's outstanding debts in Halifax."

Sena leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table, looking Haverstock directly in the eye.

"My father's debts were cleared at four o'clock this afternoon, Mr. Haverstock," Sena said, her voice like smooth glass. "Full releases have been registered with the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia. I don't owe six cents to anyone. But let's talk about what you owe."

Fowler’s face went completely ghost-white. "What... what are you talking about?"

"The Apex Maritime account," Sena continued, her tone bright, analytical, and utterly ruthless. "You routed six hundred and forty thousand dollars through a dead Gibraltar shell to create a false paper trail linking Mr. Corvin to unauthorized offshore transfers. But you used the 2021 authorization key."

She tapped the silver flash drive with one manicured finger.

"What you didn't know, Mr. Fowler," Sena said with a faint, dangerous smile, "is that I rewrote the Gibraltar security architecture eighteen months ago. When you opened the Apex file at 11:14 AM yesterday from your private laptop in the West Wing lounge, my trapdoor protocol mirrored your personal hard drive. We have every email between you and Mr. Haverstock dating back to March."

Haverstock stood up so fast he knocked his wine glass over, dark red liquid pooling across the white linen like blood. "This is bluff! You have nothing!"

"We have the wire logs, Richard," Yusef spoke up, his voice dropping into that quiet, terrifying register that made strong men tremble. "We have the offshore accounts in Nassau. We have the tax evasion records for Haverstock Holdings. And thirty minutes ago, my legal team delivered those exact files to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Financial Crimes division."

Haverstock’s breath hitched violently. He looked at Fowler, whose hands were shaking so hard he could barely hold his handkerchief.

"You're ruined, Richard," Yusef said calmly, stepping forward and placing his hands on the back of Sena's chair. "By midnight, your trading license will be revoked. By morning, your assets will be frozen. And if you ever speak Miss Dark’s name again—or look in her direction—I won't use lawyers."

The room went dead silent, save for the heavy, panicked breathing of the two defeated men.

Yusef looked down at Sena, offering his arm. "Miss Dark. I believe we have a dinner reservation across town."

May you like

Sena stood up, sliding her hand over his warm forearm, feeling the firm, unyielding muscle beneath the wool. She looked at Fowler once more—the man who had tried to deny her a job two years ago, the man who had tried to destroy her life.

"Goodbye, Mr. Fowler," Sena said softly. "Clear your desk by midnight. The locks are being changed at one."
