Chapter 5 - The Glass Apartment

The thunderstorm was at its peak when Yusef’s private driver pulled up to a high-rise tower overlooking the Toronto waterfront.

It wasn't my apartment building in Parkdale.

I looked out the tinted window of the sedan, then up at the sleek silver tower stretching into the dark, rain-swept sky. "This isn't my street."

"Your street is currently compromised by media crews trying to reach Fowler," Yusef said, opening his door and holding his umbrella over the open door for me. "You're staying here tonight."

"Where is here?" I asked, stepping out into the cool night air, instinctively pulling his heavy coat tighter around my shoulders.

"My home," Yusef answered simply.

My heart did a strange, erratic jump against my ribs.

We took a private express elevator straight to the top floor. The doors slid open silently, revealing a penthouse that took up the entire forty-second level.

It was breathtaking. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of Lake Ontario, dark and vast beneath the flashes of lightning, framed by polished concrete floors, warm leather furniture, low amber lighting, and walls lined with thousands of leather-bound books. It was clean, dark, and intensely masculine, yet surprisingly warm.

"It's quiet," I murmured, stepping onto the dark hardwood.

"That's why I bought it," Yusef said, setting his keys on a marble console table. He walked over to a wet bar in the corner, pouring two fingers of dark amber whiskey into a crystal glass. He brought it over to me. "Drink this. It will help with the shock."

I took the glass, my fingers brushing against his. I took a slow sip, feeling the warmth spread through my chest, burning away the last lingering remnants of the evening's adrenaline.

"I didn't get a chance to thank you," I said, setting the glass down on a low table. I turned to face him, looking up into those magnetic hazel eyes that had dominated my world for two years. "For buying the notes. For... for standing in that dining room and calling me an asset."

Yusef stepped closer, his shadow falling over me. He didn't answer right away. He reached out, his fingers gently unbuttoning the heavy cashmere coat from my shoulders, letting it slide off onto the couch beside us.

"You aren't an asset, Sena," he whispered, his voice lower and softer than I had ever heard it before.

I frowned slightly, confused. "What?"

"I told Vance you were an asset because Vance understands numbers," Yusef said, stepping into my space until the front of his shirt brushed against the silk of my dress. He reached up, his long fingers carefully removing the silver pins from my hair, letting the dark waves fall around my shoulders. "I told Haverstock you were off-limits because if he touched you, I would have burned his world to the ground."

My breath caught completely in my throat. My hands rose instinctively, resting against his broad chest, feeling the heavy, steady thud of his heart beneath the wool.

"Yusef..."

"For two years," Yusef murmured, his gaze dropping to my lips before rising back to my eyes, "I've watched you sit in that office. I've watched you work until your eyes were red. I've watched you refuse every bonus, every promotion, every offer of help, because you thought you had to pay for your father's sins alone."

"I did," I whispered, tears rising again, but this time they were different—light, warm, free.

"Not anymore," Yusef said fiercely, leaning down until his forehead rested against mine. "The debt is dead, Sena. The ledgers are closed. The only thing left between us is what you want."

"I want you," I said, the words spilling out of my soul before my mind could censor them. "I've wanted you since the day you walked into that interview room and hired me."

Yusef let out a low, ragged breath. He cupped the back of my neck with his hand, his thumb resting against my pulse point, and brought his lips down onto mine.

The kiss wasn't gentle. It was possessive, deep, and filled with two years of unspoken desire, suppressed heat, and fierce protection. I melted into him, my arms wrapping around his neck, pulling him closer, feeling the hard, powerful lines of his body pressed against mine.

When he finally pulled back, both of us breathing heavily, his eyes were blazing with a fire that made me weak at the knees.

"You're staying with me, Sena," Yusef murmured against my lips, his hands resting firmly on my waist. "Not as my accountant. Not as my analyst. As my equal."

I smiled—a real, radiant smile that reached all the way to my gold-flecked eyes—and pulled him down for another kiss.

"Only if I still get to audit your personal accounts," I whispered against his skin.

Yusef laughed—a rich, deep sound that echoed through the glass apartment—and carried me toward the quiet darkness of his bedroom.
