Chapter 2 - The Breach on Euclid

The brownstone at 414 Euclid Avenue looked peaceful from the outside, shrouded in the shadows of ancient oak trees and bathed in the amber glow of a single streetlamp. But to Enzo’s trained eye, the quiet was wrong. A side window on the ground floor was cracked open—not wide enough for a breeze, but wide enough for a shoulder. A jagged shard of glass winked in the dark.
Enzo killed the engine three houses down, coasting the SUV into the deep shadow of a derelict moving van.
"Stay here, Sadie," Enzo instructed, his hand already dropping to the custom-tooled holster beneath his jacket. "Lock the doors. If anyone touches this glass who isn't me or Ray, you press this button on the center console. It drops the steel plating over the windows. Understand?"
"Don't leave me," she whispered, her small fingers catching the edge of his sleeve.
"I’m right outside," Enzo promised, his voice dropping into that deep, resonant register that commanded absolute obedience. "I’m coming back for you."
He slipped out of the driver's seat into the cool autumn night air. Ray was already out, moving with the silent, predatory grace of an apex predator, holding a suppressed Sig Sauer close to his chest. Across the narrow yard, Angelo and Ricky materialized from the darkness like smoke, signaling a two-finger ready sign toward the rear kitchen entrance.
"Clear," Ray whispered, tapping his comms earpiece.
Enzo didn't bother with the front door. He marched up the wooden steps, bypassed the welcome mat, and kicked the heavy oak door precisely beside the deadbolt.
CRACK.
The frame splintered instantly, the lock mechanism tearing out of the rotten wood with a metallic groan. The door swung wide, slamming against the interior hallway wall.
Enzo stepped inside, his gun raised, eyes sweeping the entryway. The house smelled of lavender soap, old books, and—underneath it all—the metallic, copper tang of fresh blood.
"Living room clear," Ray hissed from the left, sweeping his weapon across the parlor where a half-packed vanity case sat open on a chair, a blue silk dress laid out neatly across the bed. Beside it, a pair of elegant heels rested on the rug. The ghost of a life interrupted.
"Kitchen?" Enzo barked, his heart hammering against his ribs in a rhythm he hadn't felt since the night they buried his father.
"Kitchen is empty, but there’s blood on the linoleum," Ray called out, his boots clicking softly as he moved toward the rear hallway stairs. "Upstairs, Boss. Second door on the right."
Enzo didn't wait for him. He took the stairs two at a time, his footsteps heavy and rhythmic, his mind narrowing down to a single, hyper-focused point of lethal intent. The second door on the right was half-open, warm light spilling out onto the scuffed hardwood floor.
He kicked it open.

The scene inside looked like a war zone compressed into a ten-by-twelve bedroom. A bedside lamp lay shattered on the floor, its bulb flickering weakly. A mahogany dresser had been shoved sideways, drawers pulled out and dumped in search of valuables or worse.
And in the center of the room, lying motionless beside a overturned chair, was Claire.
