Chapter 9 - Shadows on the Terrace

The crisp autumn air of late November carried the scent of woodsmoke and damp earth over the private gardens behind the North Side estate. Two months had passed since the night Viktor Krovnikov’s reign of terror collapsed into ruin, and the iron-shuttered safehouse had long since transformed back into a lived-in, breathing home.
Inside the sunroom, Sadie sat cross-legged on the Persian rug, her red balloon tied securely to the arm of a sofa, meticulously coloring a new picture. This one featured a tall man in a sharp suit holding a small girl's hand, walking beside a woman in a blue dress underneath a sky filled with bright, impossible stars.
Out on the stone terrace, Enzo leaned against the wrought-iron railing, a glass of bourbon resting in his palm. The city lights flickered in the distance, a sprawling grid of neon and ambition that had once been his entire universe. Now, the periphery of his vision was defined by softer boundaries—the sound of Sadie’s laughter floating through the open French doors, and the light, familiar footsteps of Claire stepping out onto the patio beside him.
She wore a cream-colored cashmere sweater, her dark hair catching the amber glow of the exterior wall lamps. She didn't say anything at first; she simply slipped her hand into his free one, her fingers locking comfortably against his calloused palm, the sapphire ring catching the moonlight.
"Ray called," Claire said quietly, breaking the silence.
Enzo didn't look away from the horizon. "And?"
"The remaining assets from the Krovnikov shipping channels have officially cleared the federal receivership. The municipal court signed off on the community trust this afternoon." Claire turned her head to look at him, her dark eyes searching his profile. "He’s setting up the foundation for the children's wing at St. Jude’s, isn't he?"
"Ray likes to keep busy," Enzo replied, a dry, faint amusement touching his lips. "And I like having clean ledgers. No blood money, no leveraged extortion. Just legitimate logistics managed by people who know how to keep their word."
"You're changing, Enzo," she murmured, her thumb tracing the back of his hand.
"I'm not changing," he said, turning to face her fully, his dark eyes softening as they met hers. "I'm just finally investing in something that isn't built to die."
Claire smiled, a gentle, radiant expression that had slowly erased the last lingering shadows of the terror that brought them together. She leaned closer, resting her head against his shoulder.

"Good," she whispered. "Because we have a wedding to plan, and the bride refuses to let the groom handle the guest list this time. No mobsters at table four."
Enzo let out a low, genuine rumble of laughter, pulling her tight against his side. "Table four is reserved exclusively for people who can chew their food without checking their blind spots. Everyone else sits outside in the garden."
