Chapter 3 - The Broken Ledger

The door burst inward, sending wood splinters flying across the rug.
Dr. Thorne stepped into the room, a sleek stainless-steel medical tray in his gloved hands. Behind him stood Vanessa, her eyes sharp and victorious, holding a heavy ring of brass master keys.
"Such dramatic children," Dr. Thorne said, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. He reached into his coat pocket and drew out a pre-filled syringe containing a thick, milky liquid. "Noah, stand down. Your sister needs rest. Her delusion that her late mother is speaking through the masonry is becoming dangerous to her psychological health."
"She’s not delusional!" Noah yelled, raising the iron fire poker. "She’s alive! She’s down in the sub-level! My father locked her up to protect your dirty pharmaceutical tests!"
Dr. Thorne didn't flinch. He merely glanced at Vanessa.
"He knows too much," Vanessa said flatly. "The sedatives won't be enough now. Call the transport team from the facility. We’ll move both of them down to the lower ward before Julian gets back from his conference in Chicago."
"Julian won't like us taking the children," Dr. Thorne hesitated slightly.
"Julian did what was necessary two years ago, and he’ll do what is necessary tonight to protect his freedom," Vanessa snapped. "Do it!"
Dr. Thorne lunged forward, reaching for Lily.
Noah didn't hesitate. He swung the iron poker with all the strength in his fourteen-year-old frame. The heavy metal struck the medical tray, sending the syringe and glass vials shattering against the wall. Dr. Thorne barked in pain as the edge of the poker caught his wrist.
"Run, Lily!" Noah screamed, grabbing her arm and shoving past Dr. Thorne into the hallway.
"Catch them!" Vanessa shrieked, her cultured voice breaking into a venomous roar.
Noah and Lily sprinted down the carpeted grand staircase, their socked feet slipping on the polished oak steps. Behind them, heavy footsteps thundered down the hall.
Instead of heading for the front entrance—which Noah knew was secured with an electronic keypad that required Vanessa’s thumbprint after 8:00 PM—Noah pulled Lily toward the dark west wing: the library.
"The library?" Lily panted, her little chest heaving. "Noah, it’s a dead end!"
"Mom said the ledger is in Dad’s primary safe!" Noah shouted, shoving the heavy double oak doors of the library open and locking the internal bolt behind them.
The library was a massive two-story room lined with thousands of leather-bound volumes, smelling of old paper and beeswax. In the far corner stood a massive, antique steel safe that had belonged to the family for generations.
Noah rushed to the safe, his hands shaking violently.
"What's the combination?" Lily asked, looking back terrified at the door as Dr. Thorne began hammering against the thick wood outside.
"It’s not numbers," Noah said, staring at the five-letter mechanical dial on the front of the steel door. "Dad told me once... he said the combination was the only thing he truly cared about."
Noah’s mind raced through his father’s life. His mother’s name? E-L-E-A-N? No, too obvious. The company’s name? V-A-N-C-E?
He looked at the portrait hanging above the mantle—a portrait painted ten years ago, when Noah was four and Lily was a newborn. His mother was holding Lily, and his father was looking down at them with an expression of pure, unadulterated adoration.
What did he care about before the greed ruined him?
Noah spun the letter dials rapidly: H-O-P-E-S.
Click. Nothing.
He reset the lock. He thought of his father’s favorite phrase, carved into the lintel above the fireplace: Veritas—Truth.
He spun the dials: V-E-R-I-T.
A deep, heavy mechanical THUNK echoed from inside the heavy steel door.
"It worked!" Lily gasped.
Noah pulled the heavy iron handle down. The safe door swung open with a slow, heavy creak.
Inside sat stack upon stack of bound bearer bonds, international currency, two passports bearing his father’s face under different names, and—resting in the center—a thick, black leather-bound journal stamped with the crimson seal of Vance Biometrics.
Noah grabbed the ledger, flipping through the pages under the dim library lamp.
The entries were terrifyingly detailed: dates, patient code numbers, financial transfers amounting to tens of millions of dollars from offshore accounts, and at the bottom of every page, two signatures: Julian Vance and Vanessa Grant.
And on page forty-two, a entry dated sixteen months ago:
Subject 01 (E. Vance): Secured in Sub-Level 3. Medical monitoring active. Suppression protocol authorized by CEO J. Vance.
"He really did it," Noah whispered, a tear dropping onto the ink, smudging his father’s name. "He buried her alive for money."
Suddenly, the library doors splintered violently inward.

Vanessa stepped through the ruined doorway, holding a sleek, silver taser, her face contorted in vicious fury. Beside her stood two burly men in black tactical uniforms—security guards from the Biometrics facility.
"Give me the ledger, Noah," Vanessa said, her voice terrifyingly quiet as the two guards fanned out to block the exits. "Or I will let Dr. Thorne test the new nerve agent on your sister right in front of you."
